Look at this mudroom! Here’s how to hack it in a day

Jessica recently took an under-utilized closet, added some IKEA pieces (BESTÅ and BILLY) for storage and made them into beautiful mudroom furniture for her home.

This is how it was before:

And AFTER! It went from drab to absolutely fab.

After
The main components of Jessica’s mudroom furniture are 5 IKEA items:
  • 1 BESTÅ TV unit (70 7/8 x 15 3/4 x 25 1/4″)
  • 2 BILLY bookcases (15 3/4 x 11 x 41 3/4″)
  • 2 BILLY height extension kits (16 x 11 x 14″)

The first thing she tackled was the bench. She assembled the BESTÅ TV unit and rested it on the baseboards and some pieces of wood painted to match the floor.

Then on top of the bench, she added the 2 small BILLY bookcases on left and right. They just sit on top of the BESTÅ and were mounted to the walls around it. The extension units were secured above the BILLY bookcases.

To make the units look built-in Jessica used a 1 x 4 where the BESTÅ meets the wall.

After that, she installed the shiplap panels cut out of scrap plywood. The first board was able to sit on the 1 x 4. The top piece of shiplap got a shelf added to it before it went onto the wall.

Lastly was a lot of caulking to seal up the gaps and finish out the edges. After the mudroom furniture was installed Jessica went over all of the wood with Extra White from Sherwin Williams. It’s a pretty close match to the IKEA white.

The final touch was to hang the hooks, also from IKEA. She started with the one in the center and then evenly spaced them toward the outside.

And that’s it. Jessica did the install all in a day, by herself. The only bit she needed help with was shoving of the BESTÅ into position.
