We have a small house and our kids currently share a bedroom. We needed more storage space without adding more furniture to an already small room. This bunk bed with storage hack, from start to finish, was all accomplished in one day (approx. 5-6hrs).
I can’t believe IKEA doesn’t already make the KURA bunk bed this way. It seems there are so many people looking for something like this and they are so close with this bed. I like that the bottom bed is an actual bed frame and not just a mattress on the floor and of course, the under bed storage is a great addition to any small room.
IKEA items used:
- 2 IKEA KURA reversible beds
- Set of 2 MALM Under Bed Drawers
Other materials and tools:
- Fastening brackets
- Nuts and bolts
Steps to hacking a KURA bunk bed with storage
Purchase 2 IKEA KURA Bunk Beds. We bought used.
Cut the long corner legs and build the lower bed/support.
Use nuts and bolts to secure bed slats that didn’t have the included IKEA plastic hardware.
Attach metal brackets to secure the full KURA top bunk to the base bed.
Lift the full KURA bunk bed on top of the hacked KURA base bed.
Secure the bunk in place with the brackets and additional screws.
Assemble the MALM Under Bed Drawers.
Insert them under the lower bunk and you’re done.
The hardest parts were making sure the cuts on the legs were the correct length and making sure to secure the bunk to the base. The long front piece of wood could use a support beam.
One thing that I might still do is add a support beam in between the MALM drawers to support the base bed. Since you are removing the lower piece of wood to accommodate the under bed drawers.
