Slick & Modern Wall-Mounted Shoe Tree – from a Pot Lid Holder

Materials: RATIONELL VARIERA pot lid organizer

Description: I wanted a space-saving way to store a few of my sneakers. I was coveting one of the many modern solutions that are available, but alas, I was troubled by the high prices!

I scoured the IKEA website to find a hackable product — and lo! — I found RATIONELL VARIERA pot lid organizer. The light bulb went off in my head!

The RATIONELL VARIERA pot lid organizer is fully adjustable, so I simply made it the length I needed so it would work for my shoes. Then, I attached it to the wall with a drywall hook and VOILA! I had a modern (and very slick, if I do say so myself) shoe tree for my colourful sneakers. Easy peasy and oh-so inexpensive.

Nice, but the wall will def get filthy.

I thought of that, but fortunately, the RATIONELL VARIERA pot lid holder has plastic “feet”, so it’s a few millimeters away from the wall. Plus, the shoes never touch the wall — just the metal — so the wall stays safe (and white!).

  3. Thank you! Adding this to my Ikea list. Brilliant. Keep up the great work.

I think this is brilliant. Way to think outside the box!! If one is concerned about dirt, you could add a strip of plexiglass as a backing, and you might even be able to use the same screw to mount both the potholder and the backing so there would still only be 1 or 2 screws. Did you use a hook at the bottom and top, or just at the top?

Thanks! We’re on the same wavelength — I thought about the some sort of plastic backer, too, but so far things are neat and clean without. (I wanted to keep it as minimal as possible.) I get by with only one hook at the top. Initially, I was going put a hook on the bottom too, but after it was mounted I realized it wasn’t necessary because (a) the pot lid holder has non-slip plastic feet which keep it from moving; and (b) my shoes weren’t so heavy as to result in the holder stretching out.

Genius! I had my eye on the STÄLL cabinet…out of desperation for shoe storage. I might give this a go first! Thanks!!!

I was looking for some means to store the shoes in my house especially that of my son. If I make something like this in his room at least for few days he will use it. Time to give it a try.

  10. Could you detail exactly how you fastened this to the wall?

Hi. Great idea, thanks! Will this work with a smaller shoe, like a girl’s ballet flat or flip flops?
