Lampshades from wooden plant pots

Materials: Kalasa plant pot

Description: I was looking for lampshades for my little beach house. Then I found these Ikea's Kalasa plant pots. I removed the plastic covering from inside. Then I just drilled holes on the bottom and added lamps and wire (also from Ikea). They are just perfect!

  1. This is a potential fire hazard, so keep an eye on them.

Even modern florescent and LED bulbs get quite hot. The thin wood of those plant pots could easily combust given enough heat.

Also, although it's difficult to see in the picture, if there is not enough insulating material between the bulb socket and the wood, a spark could jump and also ignite it that way.

In any case, I hope you have a smoke detector nearby.

  2. oh shush onemadrssn. Find a real issue to devote your time to. I've been looking at wooden pendant lights for my living room and none of them have "insulating material", despite meeting safety standards.

  3. A standard hanging lamp kit from Ikea should have more than sufficient insulation for the bulb-to-socket issue. And you could paint the inside of the basket to help with the heat resistance--use heat resistant paint with a reflective finish, even a high gloss. Turn toy can also user a lower wattage bulb and get more bang for your wattage buck in lumens-peer-watt. But LED bulbs are incredibly cool burning, so I'd stick with those (the energy savings is worth the cost if the bulbs, too).

  5. It is a nice design, appropriate for the room. But honestly, just Google "spray fire retardant." I've seen people use it for other DIY lamps, especially shades.
