Materials: MALM 4-drawer chest, white
Description: Malm unit converted into 25% Audio/Video storage, 75% Malm drawer storage.
First, we setup the Malm unit as the directions state. We did not assemble the 4th drawer and instead left the top space open. We visited the Ikea as-is section and purchased a $1.99 as-is piece of white, laminated wood. We cut this to the width of the inside of the Malm unit.
We purchased corner braces, long hinge, magnetic strike, and white, laminate chain at our local hardware store. First, we mounted the corner braces to the inside wall both (L) and (R) side.
Next, we cut the white laminated board to size and mounted it to the angle braces. We cut 2, 6 x 6 squares out of the rear board to fit the cords of the A/V equipment.
Finally, we used the extended hinge to secure the front of the 4th drawer to the laminated white board. This created a hinged access door. Finally, we added the chain to give the door support and the magnetic striker to keep the door closed when we don't need it open for access. Enjoy :)

This is a pretty bad idea. I'm going to guess you've not ran that equipment for very long in that setup?
ReplyDeleteThat amp is going to kick out some serious heat and you've next to no ventilation around the areas that require it.
I would rearrange or install some fans in the back.
Yeah, that DEFINITELY needs fans - or you may have some fried equipment on your hands.

ReplyDeletenah...good idea, slightly off execution. fans, air holes, or less equipment with more space are definitely needed here, as anonymous has said.
ReplyDeleteyou need air holes on each side or back and put a slim profile fan attached to power management plug so it automatically turns on and off with AVR unit.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback all - I am the original submitter of this and while I did not provide a rear picture, there are 2 server grade, high velocity fans mounted in the rear where the 6 x 6 cutouts were made... One is an intake - the outer exhausts - plenty of ventilation.
ReplyDeleteHey OP, why didn't you include that info about the fans? It is part of the hack, after all. However regardless of the super great fans you have, the components will most likely brick. The vents on the top of each are there for a reason and covering them up with another component defeats their ability to vent. Good luck with that.
ReplyDeleteWithout knowing which pieces of equipment are in there, how can you assume the vents are at the top of the equipment? The "AMP" that anonymous claimed would give off serious heat ... isn't even an "AMP" ... it's a home theater PC of which exhausts out the rear and is then picked up and exhausted by the rear fans.... Same with the Phillips unit - it has a rear exhausting fan built into it.... Shall I continue?
