Modern Hideaway Dressing Table
Materials: Vika Veine, Vika Lage, Sandby, low voltage downlights, mirror, plastic trays, Velcro strips
Description: I really wanted a dressing table for all my girly things...but all the ones in the stores were very old fashioned!
Recently married, all our furniture is pretty new and in a modern chocolate brown, so I wanted something to suit.
Finally, after much Googling...I came up with this design.
- Vika Veine desktop in brown
- Vika Lage legs in chrome
- Sandby seat in white
- Lights from hardware store
- Plastic trays, mirror and Velcro strips from department/discount stores
My husband lovingly put it all together and I absolutely love it!!! The mirror and lights are stuck on using Velcro strips. It sticks perfectly to the felt.
We left the felt pockets (on the right) for my brushes which works really well.
There is a powerboard tucked inside so I can plug in my hairdryer / straightener (hair stuff stored in the Sandby seat).
I love how everything is laid out in front of me...and then can be all hidden away in a flash. The seat perfectly tucks under the table.
The only other thing I would like to do is hide the peeking white cables (from the lights). Still thinking about that one...
Hope you like it! Our first hack :)

ReplyDeleteWow! Awesome dressing table. You could perhaps try to disguise the cables with black fabric, felt or something. Or paint them black?
ReplyDeleteThanks, great idea! Been thinking maybe black electrical tape to make it less noticeable.

ReplyDeleteHi! This is so perfect! Do have a more detailed description of how you guys put the lights and everything on? I'm one of those people who neds to follow directions to a tee lol..LOVE THIS THOUGH!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you know if your husband had any problems with screwing in the legs? I just got one of these, and I'm trying to figure out if I should take a power drill to the darn thing.
ReplyDeleteHe tried using the power drill but it was too big and he couldn't get close enough because the leg got in the way. He manually screwed them in by hand.
DeleteAny idea on how to get a table like this that folds up completely? So it can be portable? I love love love this hack and I want one bad!!! I have been looking everywhere for something like this and this is the first I have found.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting it!!!
This is awesome! I'm going to college in the fall and I'm definitely making this for my dormroom :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!
Deletewould love to make this when I move into a new apt. does anyone know if the vika veine is just seasonal, or permanent?
ReplyDeleteThe Vika Veine has been around for at least a year now, I have been saving up do this same project for my fiancee as a surprise gift, only to find out that 3 out of the 4 IKEAS in our NY 40 mile range stopped carrying it :(, but still one of them has it! I will post pictures when I make it this weekend!
ReplyDeletePS. Kudos to Jess!
Thank you, looking forward to seeing your version! What a great fiance you are!! :)
DeleteAwesome! I want to make one of these for my wife. Can I ask what size mirror you used?
ReplyDeletei LOVE this! but could you explain how you put it together?
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me where you got the plastic trays from? My husband bought me the desk and set it up as my Mother's Day gift. Now, I actually have to organize my junk. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is ingenuity at its finest. Well done, this is very creative. I'm now going to get my boyfriend to replicate it.
ReplyDeleteHei.. may i ask u the actual and detail size of the table, width, length, height, and also the mirror. We dont have IKEA here in Indonesia, but i love this design so much, so i want to make one :)
ReplyDeletethanks!
Do you remember if the side panels had identical holes? I just got this and am wondering if one of my side panels is defective. It has two holes on the top but zero holes on the bottom(the tan side.) (The other side panel has two holes on the top and four holes on the underside.) In case mine is defective, is this something I can take a drill to or do I need to take it back since I'd be drilling 4 new holes entirely?
ReplyDeleteHi Jess,
ReplyDeleteI have been in the same boat looking for the perfect vanity for years. The one I love is several hundreds of dollars, and not something I envision spending that much money on! I am determined to recreate this awesome vanity you made. Since I am not the most handiest person I could use some pointers. Can you please explain the lights that you bought? How are they powered? Please help...
Thank you so much for sharing your vanity hack! I recently inherited a beautiful antique dressing table from my grandmother. My challenge is adding lights around the table without taking away from the antique charm. I don't like regular 'makeup mirrors', they dont provide enough light! Your post inspired my solution. I am going to mount long led strips on a base with hinges from the back sides of the mirror-I will be able to reach around each side and pull the lights out when I need to use them, then tuck them away when done.
