Karlstad Swings

Materials: Karlstad Chairs and Loveseat, U-Channel, Cables

Description: We wanted to create a fun sitting area for employees of our advertising agency to brainstorm creative ideas for clients. We took standard Karlstad furniture, bought some metal U-channel, plastic coated cable and suspended them 8″ from the floor.

These efforts can run concurrently and integrate.

I love the idea of the swings, but the way the chairs are rigged is incorrect. The wire rope clips are installed incorrectly and could fail, possibly dropping the furniture and a person in it. This image shows the proper use for the wire rope clips.

Load test with 500 pounds of something. Remember that the dynamic effects of a 250 pound+ person plopping into a chair is much higher than 250 pounds. Thus the 500 pound static test. You should also test by putting something under the chair and then have people plop onto it.

Love it, but would like to see the sharp edges covered with some kind of a bumper – have you come across sugru? It would do it nicely!

Oh, this would be so easy to clean under. I once told my husband I’d love all furniture to be hanging from the ceiling so that I could easily sweep up the kids clutter and wash the floor without hauling all the furniture around first…

  8. Those are too cool. What a great idea.

  9. This is wonderful! I recall seeing in Coastal Living one year twin beds hanging from ropes… Such a fun way to up the wow factor of a room. This would absolutely facilitate more productive brainstorming :) . Nice work!

How do you stop the chairs just sliding off the bars with vigorous swinging? Are they bolted on to the bottom bars in some way?

It looks really fun, but also reminds me of a the DooDoos house from Follow that Bird. Follow that Bird was a Sesame Street movie where Big Bird was taken for Sesame Street to live with his own kind. In the DooDoos house there were these bird swings in the living room instead of couches and chairs.

Looks very nice! Do you have any vacancies? ;-) You could consider covering the metal sharp edges with foam caps to prevent anyone getting hurt when walking past a swinging client….
