Dress to impress – walk in closet

Expedit walk in closet

Materials: Expedit book case

Description: After staring at a blank white wall for over two years and paging through loads and loads of advertisements about way too expensive walk in closets, the idea simply hit me to step right out of the box and go IKEA.
I needed a closet system which would fit wall to wall, which had a certain degree of flexibility/adaptability and which could be upgraded according to my savings account.:)

The solution: a combination of white Expedit book cases, with a few white doors, some drawers, a rod which my father added and ….. a real cool shoe storage system (all the girls who’ve seen this want to make their own walk in now).

If I want to, I could even add sliding doors later (PAX for instance) and even better – should I ever move, I can adapt my dressing to a completely new environment.

How did you make the “real cool shoe storage system”? Is it really a CD-storage thing?

feel like i’m having one of those. and i’m proposing it for 2012 championship, with or without doors, walk-in or not.

ps why you have only boots or open shoes? no regolar décolleté or training shoes?

I do have some other sporty shoes but they are nicely hidden behind some of the doors :)

  13. That’s a really nice setup!

  14. Marisa says:

What did you put on top of the boots, so they can stay together? I also have an opened closet and this will help. Congrats for the super project!

women’s paradise! haha :-D seriously, great combination!

great ideas!!! how did you do the square boxes for your shoes? is this part of PAX?

  17. Diana says:

Looks great! It must be really cheap in Belgium, though, as it would cost similar to buy a Pax wardrobe in Australia. Those drawer/cupboard inserts costs about $50 a piece! Of course, if would be cheaper if you already had that 4×4 Expedit bookcase :)

  18. John S says:

The shoe insert is the Expedit Shelf Insert. The link in the US store is:

Gorgeous and inspiring. The blue is refreshing and really brings everything to a higher level!

This is gorgeous! We are moving into a new house and got an obscenely expensive quote for our extremely narrow walk in. Can you tell me approximately how much this costs? I tried pricing it out on ikea’s site, but couldn’t exactly figure out all the pieces you used.

The closet units including the inserts and boxes all added up to aprox. 455 euro. The rod was paid for by my dad :) . My closet is over 3.5m wide and was added to in stages. All in all I think my mony was very well spent and I love it each time I walk into the room. The units are all white. Now expedit also has shiny white which costs more. Sofie

I just looked on the website of the Dutch Ikea, and to make this exactly like above, the total cost would be 820 euro’s (including the seven 2×2 Expedits in your bedroom). I wonder whether there is a cheaper option….

    • Anonymous says:

the seven 2×2 units including 7 red boxes and 6 doors add up to 270 euro in belgium – so in total I spent just over 700 euro’s which, to me, was worth it :)

Very nice! Can you tell me where you found the drawers? Are they regular IKEA parts?

  22. grahamophone says:

Hello – thanks so much for posting this. It just so happens, I’m doing this same sort of thing with my shelves that I no longer want in the living room. The rod in my case won’t be as long as yours, and will be fixed at one side to a slanted wall (where’s MacGyver when we need him??). It will have to endure a lot of weight, too. Can you tell me how your dad affixed the rod to the shelves? I always thought Expedits were hollow inside! And did you fasten the different shelve units together with reinforcement brackets at some point, or do you just trust the force of gravity?
    Thanks!

Where can i find the red doors on the shelves.
    please help.

    • Anonymous says:

The red “doors” are actually plastic bins that snap together, perfectly sized for the expedit shelves. I have a bunch in the expedit 4 x 4 shelf that serves as the wall between my kitchen and living/dining room. It’s handy because they have the same design front and back and allow access from both sides. In Ikea Germany they are called Lekman and come in several colors.

AMAZING i have that ikea shelf and i have had it for years and im sick of it.. but this gave me a great idea but where did you get the little white “doors” from the attach to the seperate squares!

  25. Anonymous says:

does anyone know if those expedit shoe inserts are available in the US? the link in the comment above is broken and I cannot find them… :(
