Expedit Baby Closet

Materials: 2x8 and 4x4 Expedit shelves, white

Description: We have very limited space and really small closets in our home, so I came up with an idea to utilize vertical space for baby clothes.

We already had the 2x8 Expedit, so this hack only cost around $40 for the new 4x4 unit, closet rod and rod holders.

We simply put the 4x4 Expedit together leaving out the inner shelving, and installed a closet rod. The 2 units aren't attached to each other, but I did use those gummy sticky dots for stability in addition to the wall mounting hardware included with the Expedit.

  1. I'm in a similar situation and I love this. Would love to see other space saving nursery things you did.

  2. We did this with a similar Ikea shelving unit when my kids were babies. I think I used a tension rod, which was easy but occasionally it fell down. Yours looks more sturdy.
Good job, attaching your Expedits to the wall. When my daughter was about three years old, she pulled out drawers to "climb" a dresser, and it fell over. It wasn't that tall, so we hadn't bothered to attach it to the wall, but my daughter almost had a TV fall on her head! Now I tell everyone with little kids to use the wall attachments.

  4. It is quite nitpicky, but I just wanted to point out that these are 2x4 and 2x2 Expedits, not 2x8 and 4x4. A 2x8 Expedit would have two alcoves on one side and EIGHT on the other.

That said! It looks great - very functional :)

  5. Great idea. Please anchor both pieces to your wall so that a toddler doesn't grab the bookcase to pull him/herself up and pull it over on him/her. We used small metal L-shaped brackets on every bookcase & dresser in the house.

    1. Seriously, you feel the need to point that out? IKEA encloses wall attachment items in all of their dressers, large bookcases etc. in Canada.

  6. It is clearly stated that it is wall mounted.

  7. What did you use for the closet rod/holders? Where to get them?

  9. Totally and completely off topic, but I LOVE that blue stuffed creature in the crib! So cute!

  10. @Anon.

It looks like that's an Ugly Doll! You can get them via Land of Nod or, better, Amazon. :)

  11. I like it, looks nice, MAYBE saves space, but surely not time. To put those tiny little things on hangers and then to take them off...I think the same effect with more space saved would have been if little clothes were folded.

  12. Except that folded tiny little things tend to get lost in the pile...perhaps the time taken to hang is equivalent to the time spent searching through the pile to find what one wants?

  13. Sorry, but to the poster before, 2x8 means 2 across and 8 up & down, not 2 on one side and 8 on the other. The op was correct.

Anyways, love this idea. We are expecting our first child and flats in Taiwan do not have closets so we have been struggling with ideas. This one just might end up in our nursery.

Also, I love the idea of hanging the clothes, it adds to the decor or the whole baby room.

  14. What a cool idea. Does anyone (author perhaps?) know the other parts used? Namely, the drawers and what looks to be a little cabinet drawer? Are those Ikea stuff you bought, something you made, etc? Would love to have some more details on how you constructed this as I'd replicate it exactly!

  15. Wondering how you mounted the rods inside the expedit unit? We are currently putting a tall expedit cube in our children's small closet and need to mount 2 rods, securing them on 1 side to the wall and the other to the expedit unit. We tried tension rods, but they keep falling down. I've even lightened the load of the hangers but to no avail.
