Materials: Erslev rug in light green
Description:
- I created a stencil by tracing a Moroccan tile shape onto a piece of card stock and cutting out the negative space with an Exacto knife.
- I placed the stencil on the rug starting in the top left corner.
- I used a washable white fabric paint and a stippling brush to fill in the stencil.
- I repeated steps 2 and 3 working my way from left to right all the way down the rug until the design was completed.
- Painting freehand, I filled in the unfinished spots left by the "bridges" of the stencil.

Amazing work, Natalie! This is one of the best Ikea hacks I've seen. I've been visiting this site for about a year now and this is the first time I've been compelled to post a comment. Great work!
ReplyDeleteNatalie, great job!!!! I absolutely love what you did. Plus your living room is gorgeous. I love the coffee table - where is that from??
ReplyDeleteThat's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love the room too. And the shot of green.
Natalie - that is so beautiful. Would you by any chance be able to give us more details on the stencil? Dimensions or the place where you found the design for it? I would love to be able to re-create it.
ReplyDeleteCoffee table? Cute! Where's it from?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great comments! The coffee table is from Urban Outfitters ($175).
ReplyDeleteMore details on the rug:
I got the inspiration from seeing this design in the form of a tile multiple times from various sources.
Because the rug is 4' by 7' I decided to make the stencil a perfect 1' by 1' format "tile." On a 6" by 6" piece of cardstock, I freehanded 1/4 of the tile shape which I then cut out and used as a template to trace each 1/4 of the "tile" to complete the shape. Then I drew a smaller "tile" inside this one leaving the "grout" about 1 in thick. I put two bridges on the round areas so I could easily fill in the rest of the blank spots freehand.
Love this idea! You don't see many IKEA hacks from rugs. And it's so hard to find a Moorish tile pattern rug that's not incredibly high-end and expensive.
ReplyDeleteHi Natalie, Any chance we can buy the stencil from you? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteNatalie has such good taste to begin with! Great idea!
ReplyDeleteNatalie-
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! And I absolutely adore your couch! Where from/how much?
Thanks!
LOVE the way this turned out! Thanks for sharing this great idea.
