"My Apple iMac
obstructed our dinner table for a year. My wife did not make much of it. To please her I did a little Ikea hacking. I bought a Ludvig Laptop shelf/charging station. And a Ludvig Router/modem wall cabinet. I used the wall cabinet as computer stand and the laptop shelf for my keyboard and mouse. Both Ludvigs have nice compartments for various stuff (Hard drives, headset, DVD’s etc.) The set is complemented with a Vitamin stool. When not in use the shelf is put to rest and the computer is not in the way. I think it is a nice hack and my wife is pleased. Mission accomplished."

Very neat looking!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!!! I love this, so nice and neat looking, and has both the floating & built in feel-- almost makes me want to run out and buy a Mac!
ReplyDeleteNice idea, but I am wondering if the respective height of the stool and of the keyboard make it comfortable to use. Any feedback on that ?
ReplyDeleteThis one looks really sleek! Great job!
ReplyDeleteIt seems very uncomfortable. Very nice, but uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteWow. Nice. Fits the look. :D
ReplyDeleteDoes it support the new 27" model? I'm a little concerned about weight limits.
ReplyDeleteThis is really sharp!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliments. Sitting is very comfortable. Ofcourse it is not ment for allday computing. It's our "lounge" solution. The 27" model would fit also. Weight is not a problem. You could sit on it. It's bolted strongly.
ReplyDeleteHi Gérard,
Deletei've got a Ludvig Shelf without and his lower support, and i think your solutine con make it useful; i need to know how you have fixed it to the wall.
You can answer me here: bccpql@gmail.com.
Thank you,
Pasquale
PS. Sorry for my english, i'm italian
I am so freakin' jealous!!! someday, when I tidy up, I'll send a pic of my hack, it looks cute too, and my mac's got it'S nice place, but this, floating, and sooo compact! i might just change everything!!!

Thanks so much for the inspiration!!!
WOW! that is soo good looking! I'm almost tempted to buy a mac 4 myself now... even though i hate them... but it's so smexy :D

Wow! This is so lovely. You've extended the minimalist design of the iMac to your workspace. Absolutely love it.
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice. good design.
ReplyDeletelove the setup. one thing i'm confused about...
ReplyDeletewhen i follow the link, the ikea laptop station has long support brackets on the bottom. did you modify it? how is it adequately supported without those brackets?
I love that the bottom shelf is floating. When I go to IKEA though, it has an ugly leg. How did you get away with not using the leg?
ReplyDeleteThe leg was indeed ugly. I dumped it. It is not necessary. I used bigger bolts to fix it to the wall. It is more than strong enough without the bracket. Cheers Gérard...
ReplyDeleteabsolute perfection.
ReplyDeletewhere did you get that background for your screen? I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThe background is a standard background of Apple OSX Snow Leopard. Gérard...
ReplyDeleteHello everyone i am completely new to this forum.
ReplyDeleteInterested in learning many new things. Hope we all will share our
knowledge and talk about different concepts in this blog.
Hi, nice hack.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me the name/link of the leafs wallpaper?

I am wondering why you didn't make it so that the chair could slide underneath the table when not in use? Does that make the table too high for comfortable use?
ReplyDeleteThe chair is pressured. You can go up or go down. So it is possible to fit it under the table. No problem. Feedback? twitter.com/wurkflow
ReplyDeleteCheers Gérard...
Brilliant! At organize-more-stress-less.com I am always looking for new and better ways to minimize clutter and best use space. This is absolutely awesome. I'll be sending some folks your way.
ReplyDeleteAwesome work! Looking at that, I'm wondering if perhaps it could even be done without the laptop stand underneath. When in use, the front panel of the router cabinet could be left open to provide a platform for the keyboard and mouse. Since the Apple stuff is so small, they could maybe be stowed inside when not in use?
ReplyDeleteThanks for this, Gerard. Great setup.
ReplyDeleteWhat sort of brackets does the router box come with and what bolts did you use to attach it to the wall.
I'm looking into a 27" iMac for the family and this looks like it might be a good solution, but like another commenter, I'm concerned about the weight, since the 27" weighs almost 14kg (31lbs). Expansion bolts?
uhh. My house has concrete/stone wall's. So any thick bolt will do. Weightwise no problem here.
ReplyDeleteCheers - Gérard
This computer desk is great, it's so small you can put it almost everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI love this design! I'm wondering about the viewing height of the monitor though... Do you find that you are looking up a lot? Where would eye-level be relative to the screen?
ReplyDeleteI think what I am going to do is get the laptop shelf to put the keyboard on, and get the wall mount kit for the iMac in lieu of the router cabinet. I think that would clean things up even more. I'm just wondering if there is enough room in the laptop shelf compartment to store a backup drive? The storage space of the router cabinet would be nice but I'm wondering if I can get away without it.
ReplyDeletewhere can i buy this imac desk is so damn hot!
ReplyDeletefeel nature, i like it :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so ridiculous and all the comments are exactly what I'd expect from hardcore Mac users who buy up anything shiny with round edges that have an apple on the side
ReplyDeleteThe stool sits Way too high and has no back rest. How are you suppose to do any work at your "work station" when you have to sit at perfect posture the entire time you "work."
And there's only enough space on the desk for your keyboard and mouse.
I'm glad I don't know anyone who owns one of these iDesks. I can only imagine how much money Apple will make by painting ten 2x4's bright white and assembling them in an acceptable-enough way to call it a desk.
Maybe the bar stool was a good idea because sitting 6 inches from my 24" computer screen usually irritates my eyes within 10 minutes, too.
Great look. Not bad price from Ikea too. Think I will go for a different chair though. 27 mac will look perfect!
ReplyDeleteReally gorgeous work. I love the Mac too =)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Sleek and unobtrusive, it fits the apple design so well. Makes me want to go out and pick up an iMac! Love the stool, too. I always work on the edge of my seat (or on one of those inflatable balls) - no back problems, just my preference - and I've been thinking a stool is what I need. Your solution makes it esthetically appealing, too. Great work!
ReplyDeleteCan anyone confirm that this will hold a 27 inch IMac?
ReplyDeletethe width is only Width: 60 cm therefore the screen would be hanging over the edge?
Looks great. Except you might want to change the desktop wallpaper. It's so overused...
ReplyDeletehm. why the big white box under the screen?
ReplyDeletethe cables can be hidden behind the draw - www.pground.dk
I think you should work for Apple, get the next generation of products looking even better :) I like your idea and may very well do something like this myself.. but it's easy to build all those components, maybe put a LED accent light underneath for the keyboard at night... very very nice!!
ReplyDeleteI'm very interested in getting this exact setup in my new office, but it doesn't look like Ikea is carrying these products any more. I've looked on Ikea's site, google, ebay, amazon, and can't find them. Is anyone interested in selling their's, or able to point me in the right direction? Thanks!
ReplyDelete@jeremydaggett
PS GREAT hack
shoot i think lots are not reading! lol including myself i went to ikea jokes on me!
ReplyDeletei love it! i am making my own as well! thanks for the idea
great job!
you forgot to mention the total price !
Looks very tidy, a setup i wouldn't mind myself :)
ReplyDeleteThere's no way that this is ergonomically sound: you are too close to the screen which is amplified by the position of the keyboard platform.
ReplyDeleteI get eye-sore and back pain just looking at this pic.
You claim this is comfortable but c'mon: your buttocks are at the same height as the keyboard, which means you're going to be stooped over while typing, with your head held upwards to the screen. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteIt does look nice as a setup but I severely contest its practicality.
This is awesome especially for people who need to hide their cables from little ones! Thumbs up from me!
ReplyDeleteI really like how this frees up a lot of floor space. Very clever.
ReplyDeleteI want this too it's so meet where do I buy the shelves I've just got the 27 inch I mac
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!!! I love this, so nice and neat looking, and has both the floating & built in feel. see more
