TV unit with subwoofer space

Charles hacks a neat TV stand from Ikea kitchen cabs. Similar cabinets, like this one, sells for much more.

He says, “I’ve been busy building a new TV stand for the in-wall ‘nook’ in my living room. I took some Ikea cabinets, put 3 of them together, made it more sturdy, added wheels, and customized the heck out of it. I just need to reinforce the back, and put side-panels on. It didn’t come out too bad, and it’s got a nice space for the subwoofer in the center now.”

That is a beautiful hack, but as idiot savant said a horrible place for a subwoofer. Acoustically, your going to get better bass if you put it just about anywhere else. I would also be concerned about a big subwoofer with a big magnet being so close to your LCD screen, not so good….

We recently bought one of the off the shelf entertainment units this hack emulates for about $400. Ours came with glass panes in the doors, which we presume enable us to use our remote controls for the DVD player and Tivo. We put our receiver, which gets very hot, and our center speaker in the ventilated cabinet. Wondering if the electronics get cooled enough and if the remotes can control components through the cabinet doors.

That’s a horrible place for a subwoofer for a number of reasons. Though I guess if you leave it off thats ok.
