inspiration: matthias’ besta combination

matthias, from paris, sends us some eye candy. i like how the cabinets disappear into the wall.

“you will find attached a few picture of how i stacked several besta storage combination in order to have a full wall of storage for display as well as a media center.

i have 4.50 meters (14.5′) width and i left approximately 10 centimeters (4″) behind the cabinets for all the cables and for cooling the hi-fi system that is inside the closet. no handles for the drawers and doors as i installed a push and release system bought at an hardware store for a few euros each.”

for the empty spot, I think it’d be worth cutting creating a light box. Using picture frame wood, line it with white paper, and backlight it.

I love the Lava lamp taking space in the corner where you could not fit a unit. Kudos.

This is coming from an IKEA sales manager…

The Besta in white is only available in a few EU countries for now and is not available in the US. As for Bonde, you could do something like that but it wouldn’t be as flexible.

Besta white is supposed to be global in 2008 but that has not been confirmed yet. I too am awaiting it in the US so I can do a media system.

Please keep in mind that when you are looking at the IKEA range, less than half is online/catalog. The store is the full representation of what IKEA sells.

You could probably spray paint the frames if you wanted to go with an all-white look. You’d just need to get a paint that adheres to plastic laminate, in the same shade of white (more or less – the frames are pretty well hidden by the doors).

Well, in the US (on the web site), it looks like doors and drawers are available in all colors (white, dk. brn./blck brn, beech effect and white), but the frames are only in beech and dr. brown/black brown. And a tv stand and some wall unit are in gloss white and gloss red.

So, if you just look at the combinations, it seems like its only available in beech and dark brown. I wonder why they have colored doors & drawers but not frames? Maybe its the same where you are, or maybe the other colors are at the stores and not on-line?

    Great job, matthias.

You could probably do something similar with the Bonde series from IKEA in the US and other countries. Bonde is available in white everywhere.

Hello Everyone, thanks for your nice comments :
    >puck : No earthquake in Paris and every cabinet is attached to the next one and they are all attached to a rail I made on the wall.

    >Anonymous1 : Passive cooling system : I didn’t install the back of the cabinet where is located the hi fi system. As there is 8 inch space behind the cabinet, everythings cools normally.

    >Erin : First idea was custom order for some nice italian furniture and it was part of our remodelling budget… but the price was incredible…So I spent a few hours in my ikea catalog and my meter in hand and found out I could fit them exactly on this wall. With the savings, we went in Mexico with the kids…

    >Charlotte : Besta is available in white/red/dark brown in France. Just drive accross the frontier and buy them in France ..

What are you using for a cooling system? Is it active and silent, or passive?

it took me a while to figure out why this freaked me out, but oh yes – i grew up in earthquake zones.
