an impressive hack from bryan stuart, who tells me he loves hacking ikea.
"i made a storage bed made from an ikea dalselv bed frame. i cut the legs off the bed frame, attached some hinges and handles to what was left, built a box out of mdf, 2x2's, pine trim and voila, a great storage solution."

This is fantastic! I have 2 of these beds and I would love to do this to both!

Um, Ikea makes a storage bed just like this except it has a much safer ratchet-locking mechanism to make sure it doesn't accidentally crash down on you as you've got your head in it. It costs about $300 for a queen size bed.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what the 'official' ikea model is called? i can't seem to find it on their website anymore...
ReplyDeletethanks!
what do you mean by 'official' ikea model? if you're referring to this bed - it's the dalselv.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to know what ikea model the anonymous writer was talking about. The writer said there is an IKEA model already available with the storage for about $300. HP
ReplyDeleteI just saw the storage model in the store, but not on the site - it's closer to $400 in price, but looked pretty great...
ReplyDeleteIt hinges at the headboard.
You can add hinges inside to make it safer nice hack!
ReplyDeleteIkea Equivalent is the Sultan Alsarp:

Your version looks a bit sturdier though, even if it might be a little riskier for sticking your head under it...

ReplyDeleteIs it possible to get an instruction sheet for this hack..Love it...
ReplyDeleteIs that a Siamese cat -- would it be "Open Siamese?!" lol
ReplyDeleteNice Hack! I've thought about adding a "safety bar" (like when propping open the hood of a car) for when I get our new Alsarp; even with the pistons they include ...
