I framed Jules

Materials: JULES chair

The wheels on the swivel part of this chair began to disengage from their housing but after a few temporary fixes they obviously weren’t going to last much longer. I dismantled the chair and took the metal parts to our local recycling centre but I kept the seat because I thought that I might do something with it.

The frame design is angular to contrast with the curves of the seat and has been constructed with a range of common woodworking joints including bridle, dovetail, through tenons and dowels.

The final design, drawn up on AutoCAD, is based on 25mm (1 inch) mahogany but any wood would do. I like the darkness of the mahogany (still to be varnished) but a lighter wood stain or painted would do the same thing – I was just lucky to have some spare mahogany available at the right time.

I will post as full a set of drawings as I can in the next few days if anyone is interested.
