5.1 Rear speaker stand VIKA KAJ

I bought a 5.1 home theater speaker set to go with my television. The only problem was, what to do with the rear speakers. Speakers stands are usually expensive, and not very stylish. So I decided to make my own.

(sorry for the mess)

I obviously checked this website, and I came across the Vika Curry speaker stand. Stylish speaker stands, but not suitable for smaller speakers. I did however take the idea of using an Ikea (table) leg that was available in my country: VIKA KAJ. Reason for that is the (dirt-cheap, and pretty stylish – especially in red) ADILS leg is just a little too short for my liking. So I went with the adjustable, slightly longer VIKA KAJ.

My solution after some thought was a simple one. Drill a hole in the side of the leg (put in a screw with a washer), and simply screw the table leg into a square piece of wood. Hang the speaker from the screw – and presto.

Here’s what you need:
– VIKA KAJ leg

– a square 20×20 cm piece of wood, about 1-1.5 cm thick
– a screw (size depending on your speakers)

– a washer (size depending on your speakers)

– a drill with a drill bit suited for drilling in steel
– a ruler and pencil
– safety goggles

Here’s how you do it:
First you need to take a look at your rear speaker. They usually have a hole in the back for hanging. Next, find a screw that just fits through that hole. The bigger the better. Make sure it isn’t too thick though, and make sure the head fits through the hole too. I used a washer, for an extra snug fit. The screw needs to be long enough to be able to go through one side of the leg when the speaker is attached.

Next thing you need is a drill bit with a slightly smaller diameter than the diameter of your screw. Drill a hole in the side of the leg, about [fill in] cm from the bottom (depending on the size the speaker; before you start drilling position the speaker and mark where you want the hole). Lay the leg on the ground an hold it tightly – or even better, use a clamp – and carefully drill through one side of the leg. I would advise to wear safety goggles.

Then try and get the screw (with washer) in there. I couldn’t quite get it in the first time, so I used the same drill bit and carefully made the hole slightly bigger by sort of wiggling it around. Make sure it’s in there tightly and doesn’t move around. If you screwed up – like I did on one leg – you can drill a new hole next to the hole that was too large. Make sure you can hang the speaker from the screw, then take it off again and move to the next step: attaching the leg to the wooden base.

I used a 20x20x2cm piece of wood for the base. First determine the center of the piece of wood by drawing two straight lines with your ruler and pencil, marking an X in the middle. Then take the ‘plate’ of the VIKA KAJ leg and position it in the middle of the piece of wood. I put one screw through the middle hole to keep it in place, then continued to put in the other screws. I then took the middle one out again. When it’s firmly attached, you can screw the ‘leg’ piece of VIKA KAJ on, and your speaker stand is done.

I stuck a small piece of felt to the back of the speaker to rest against the leg (see back of speaker-picture). Oh and by the way, you can’t just run the speakerwires through the leg. Because it’s adjustable, it isn’t completely hollow.
