Making a Living Room Partition with IKEA BILLY

I built a 3 meter wide by 2.30 tall entry way and living room partition.

Materials:
  • Billy Bookshelves
  • Moreno glass doors
  • Benno DVD Shelves
My entry way / living room partition:

The entry way has 2 Billy bookcases fixed together (back to back) as one unit, with no back attached to the other. Inside the top part of the bookshelves, I added a rod for coats. At the bottom, it has has a sliding portion that holds 3 beer cases.

The middle is 10 Benno DVD shelves built into 5 units, again back to back.

The Moreno glass doors needed new mounting points drilled as they were not made for the DVD shelves. The center two are covered in fabric, rest with the white side out.

Top are custom boxes to fill out the space, up to the ceiling. All lights are by remote control.

The living room partition:

I got sub flooring cut free at the hardware store. They provide the backing to the Billy units as well as create a wall for art work.

Top boxes custom cut for old speakers.

Lack shelf unit mounted in a vertical position with another Lack shelf attached with 2 legs to define living room from kitchen area.

The narrow BILLY bookshelf is a possibility. But you’ll need to do a bit of hacking. Lay the BILLY bookshelf on the side. If it’s not long enough for your sofa, add a BILLY extension. Secure the extension to the short side of the BILLY. Then wrap the entire BILLY with MDF. Add casters to the bottom. It does not look exactly the same as your inspiration photo but it makes a lovely room divider bookcase too. See a behind-the-sofa room divider and book storage.
