MOOOI Random Light Dupe with this IKEA DIY Hack

Marie of m2jl studio sent me this lovely hack of the Regolit paper lampshade. Turning it into a lookalike of the famous (and very expensive) MOOOI Random Light.

She says, “For lighting, we used the inexpensive Regolit lampshade from IKEA, some wool, and some glue to create lamps inspired by the beautiful MOOOI Random light. Just make sure you don’t wrap the wool around the shade too tightly to retain its shape.”

What is the MOOOI Random Light?

The MOOOI Random Light is a modern and iconic lighting fixture that has become incredibly popular in recent years. Designed by Dutch designer Bertjan Pot in 2002, the Random Light is made up of a spherical shape made from a resin-soaked fiberglass webbing material. The webbing is wrapped around an inflatable beach ball, which is then removed after the resin has cured, leaving behind a lightweight and durable structure.

One of the reasons why the Moooi Random Light has become so popular is its unique and eye-catching design. The spherical shape is both playful and sophisticated, making it a perfect statement piece for any modern interior. The Random Light is available in a range of sizes, from small pendants to large chandeliers, making it a versatile and adaptable lighting solution for any space.

Can I DIY an MOOOI Random Light?

There are lots of tutorials on recreating the MOOOI random light but they generally follow these steps.

Supplies you’ll need:

Step 1: The sphere

The most important step is in choosing the right sphere to use as a base to wrap webbing all around. Marie’s hack used the IKEA Regolit pendant lampshade which measures 17 ¾” in diameter. It’s a good-sized pendant. We also like this one using an exercise ball which is awesome if you want a large statement pendant light.

Step 2: The material

Then choose the material and color. Pick any kind of string like yarn or wool in the color you want for your statement lamp. Marie used blue wool but you can easily opt for white or grey or pink! Any shade (or if you’re braver, a mix of colors) will look great with this lamp hack.

Step 3: The technique

It’s simple. First, spray the Regolit lamp shade with spray adhesive. Then starting at the top of the shade, weave the wool down across the lampshade. And then up to the next section. And as its name says, just wind the wool randomly all over the sphere. If the glue dries, spray a little more and keep winding. Step aside to take a look at it occasionally to make sure there are no gaps or spots that have too many strands of wool. When done, tuck the end under the lampshade and glue it down.

Step 3: The finish

Finish with a spray of Mod Podge Spray Acrylic Sealer to keep all the threads in place and “harden” it somewhat.

Hang the lampshade as usual and there you have it, your own DIY MOOOI Random Light for a fraction of the price. A unique and stylish lighting fixture and a playful addition to any room.
