not quite a full-fledged hack but i liked richard’s idea of sanding down the mackis drawers to fit theexpedit bookcase. a great idea if you’re thinking of ways to organise your bookcase.

Expedit with MACKIS storage

“the drawers are stock ikea drawers, but i had to sand quite a bit (3/16″, i think) off the boxes to make them fit. it’s really annoying that they don’t just naturally fit in there, but with them stuffed into the shelving unit it has a bit more structural integrity now. i also added a wine rack out of some plywood left over from building a pair of donald judd-style benches.” link.

Does anybody know if a 6 x 6 foot Expedit or even the
    5 x 5 version really need an anti-topple support? I was
planning to use the unit for 12″ LP records, with heavier
items on the lowest shelf. I am in a building which tenants
have to use free standing items. Thanks

I have a 5×5 and two 4×4 and none of them are attached to the walls at all and are fine … you might not want a child climbing up the front of them, and if you want it to stick out into the room as a room divider, then indoor games of football (or tripping over a rug) are bad ideas if you don’t have them attached to the wall (and not great ideas even if you do!)

The unit does not have a backing. You would have to make your own.

Hey- Does anyone know if you can just spraypaint the backing on this bookcase to add some contrasting color between the white of the shelves and the (front-facing) backing?
