$15 Underdesk laptop shelf mount

I added a laptop shelf under my desk to store my laptop and reduce the clutter on the desk. It works great for running a laptop with an external monitor and keyboard.

Materials for an underdesk laptop shelf:

The dimensions for the Ekby Laiva are as follows:

  • Width: 59 cm
  • Depth: 24 cm
  • Thickness: 1.5 cm.

Measure your laptop dimensions and saw the shelf if it is too long. I sawed the EKBY LAIVA board shorter according to my laptop length.

Peforated metal band

So I bought a box of steel band (perforated strapping band) that is usually used for holding pipes onto walls.

Measure the length of the steel band according to the height allowance between the underside of the desk and shelf plus the length of the EKBY LAIVA shelf.

The steel band will wrap around the board.

The screw length is around 5/8 inch or 1.6cm. Put 2 screws in the middle of the board and 4 screws at the sides of the board.

Make sure you have measure properly before bending the steel band. If not the shelf will be slanted as the length of the steel band is at different lengths.

washer

And use some washer when mounting it under the desk. The reason for this is for the screw to apply to a larger surface area onto the steel band.

And make sure you leave some space at the back for the laptop wire connection and air vent.

Total cost:

  • Steel band – SGD$6.50
  • Screws and washer – SGD$4
  • EKBY LAIVA shelf – SGD$3.90
  • Total = SGD$14.40
