BILLY bookcases with GRYTNÄS glass doors

- BILLY bookcase, white, 80x28x106 cm
- GRYTNÄS glass door, off-white, 40×100 cm
- UTRUSTA hinge

We were looking for mid-height bookcases with glass doors for our living room, at a reasonable price. The 80×106 cm BILLY bookcase had the right dimensions, as its 28 cm depth did not take too much of our limited space. There are glass doors for BILLY, but having decided we did not like the aluminium framed MORLIDEN doors, we had a problem. The wooden framed OXBERG glass doors are only available for the full height bookcases, not for our mid height ones.

What to do?

Looking through IKEA for other possible glass doors, it turned out that the GRYTNÄS kitchen doors might fit. These are quite nice, in off-white MDF board and with a more robust feeling to them. So with a bit of careful measuring of the kithcen cupboards, it was fairly straight-forward to drill new holes for the UTRUSTA hinges in the sides of the bookcases, and put on the doors. Since the doors are 3 cm taller than the original BILLY doors, there was just enough space for the lower hinge above the bottom shelf.

We are quite happy with the result, and the final step will be to fit a smooth white worktop onto the bookcases, and find some nice handles for the doors.

Did you use the old BILLY? Because we tried this hack today, and while it works in general, the hinges (the part that snaps into the doors) collide with the bottom board which means there is a huge gap between the shelf and the doors. We will cut out part of the board to get the doors closer.

I have a problem with mounting doors. Could you write what are dismensions for holes to mount the hinges from the edges from abowe, bottom, and depth from the edge ?

  3. Amanda Betenson says:

Yes these doors are still available!

You just have to go to the store to get the exact size you need. They don’t sell all sizes online.

  6. Katie says:

What did you do for the legs of the bookshelf?
I know you turned the Billy bookshelf on its size so did you add legs after every 2nd door?

  7. dit says:

Did you use the new Billy shelf? And it looks like the white of the doors and the shelf is the same, is that right?

  8. nadiya says:

I had my heart set on this and am so angry the doors arent available, I cant even find a suitable replacement, Whats worse is they sell the doors in the UK, just not the US.

  9. Shondra says:

Darn! These doors are no longer available at Ikea.
