Slähult table top + Expedit shelf unit = Kitchen island

We bought a Slähult table top from the as-is department and fastened it to the top of our existing Expedit shelf unit to make a kitchen island for our new-to-us home. (We plan to re-do the kitchen in Grimslöv but in the mean time we needed more counter space!)

Kitchen Island

To fasten the top to the shelf unit, we straightened out 4 Vågen curtain rod brackets we had left over from a previous project to an L-shape, then screwed the top & shelf unit together.

So sad they don’t offer that Kind oft kallax any more…

Hi svaen — thanks for your comment!

It is the discontinued Expedit shelving with the small row of cubbies in the middle. The new Kallax only has 3 rows of same-sized boxes. When we got this one, the store was trying to sell the last of their stock, so it was discounted.

Anyway, on the left side of the picture, where the island meets the wall, we have added a Hörda 4-shelf wine rack. It fits perfectly!

i’m also planing to build something similar, so can you tell me what expedit/ kallax shelf you used?
looks like it’s customized by yourself..

“It is the discontinued Expedit shelving with the small row of cubbies in the middle.” she wrote it in the comments above yours. it´s not available anymore, you could only get the new version of the kallax shelf, which does not have the smaller section but 3 same sized ones.
