Make me a built in bookcase she said……

Materials: 3 Billy bookcases and a Gnedby shelving unit, bits of an Akurum kitchen unit

My wife wanted a built in ‘library’ bookcase in our new living room, and trusted my woodworking skills to hack IKEA units to do the job. I managed to squeeze 3 BILLY bookcases and a GNEDBY CD tower into the space, having to cut down the edges of the CD tower and a bookcase on a 45° angle, I then used the redundant side of an AKURUM pantry unit (suitably trimmed to size) as the new vertical panel.

Once the bookcases were ‘as one’ I trimmed the edges and faces with 1×2 inch pine and painted them white to ensure a uniform blended look.

I also realized the bottom shelves would be too low with some baseboard trim applied, so I bought extra shelves and used them to raise the base shelf above the level of the baseboard.

Some upside down baseboard trim and a triangular fillet finished off the top (yes the ceiling slopes downwards, making the job of ensuring a built in look was a little tricky, but I think I pulled it off !
