Expedit Queen Platform bed

Materials: Expedit

Description: We were inspired by other Expedit bed hacks, specifically this one and decided to make a Queen Platform bed. My daughter moved into an apartment and we needed to have more storage as well as a nice size bed.

We were very excited that we (two females without any experience) could create this bed. We used 2 1×5 bookcases, 1 1×2, and 2 1×1 bookcases so that we can get as close to a queen size (60×80) as possible. We attached a continuous hinge to the 2 pieces of 60×40 plywood, so that she can have storage under the bed as well. A black piece of fabric was used to cover the plywood. and we used a 4x4x12 but into 8 17.6 inches, which we used support posts. We used brackets and 3/4 size screws to attach the posts to the plywood.

I think that’s it.. enjoy

Totally late but in case someone else ever sees this since Ikea has changed it to Kallax you could always get 3 1 x 4 bookcases and 2 1 x1 cubes and put those together in pretty much the same way. I would also add 2 more 4x4x12 in the middle to add more of a hold but thats just how i feel. Love this and can’t wait to sleep in my version. best of luck

Where did you get the comforter?

  3. Diane says:

Did you make any ventilation holes in the plywood support to allow damp in the mattress to evaporate and prevent mildew? (this is the reason many beds are supported by slats) You might also need to leave out a box either side to allow air to get under the bed…

how did you connect the bases together so they did not slide?

Do you think there is a weight restriction for this?

Two females? Don’t discredit yourself!!! Women are often times much better and problem solving than men. It’s just how our brains work. Congrats, by the way!! Looks awesome! :)

In Australia, they are still called expedit book cases. However, they no longer sell the 1 x 5 cube ones ;( They are approximately 33cm height, depth and width boxes – so 1 x 5 is 1 wide, by 5 high… a 1 x 2 is 1 high by 2 wide etc… In Australia, Bunnings and a few other hardware places are selling similar sized shelving, so it may be worth looking around or even a crafty person could make them if they work out the measurements they need and buy the storage tubs/boxes/baskets before they start…

I looked at the ikea site and don’t find the unit with 5 shelves or the other ones you used. I love how yours turned out and really want to make it, just need a little more instruction. Thanks

I am a little confused. Did you build your own bookcases or buy them from Ikea? I don’t understand what size bookcase you mean if you bought them at Ikea when you say 1×5 and 1×1

  10. Susie says: From what I understand, Ikea replaced the Expedit shelves with Kallax to save a little bit on the thickness of the shelves. The inside measurements are the same.

What are the measurements of the book cases ? chao.

There is no kellex line on ikeas website. Any other suggestions?

  13. tiffany says:

IKEA changed their line. The current line that has this unit is called kellex.

I tried looking up “Expedit” on the Ikea website and only one sort of shelf came up. I could not find the ones used in this project on the site :( .

Do they not make them anymore?

If they don’t, any suggestions for a good replacement?
