Sharpie + Ikea Rug = Saving Thousands of Dollars

Materials: Adum 4×6 Ikea Rug, Sharpie, Painters Tape

Description: To create a Beni Ouarain style rug, (1) measure (feel free to make the lines perfect or imperfect) and (2) lay out painter’s tape in one direction. (3) Draw a line down one side of the tape using a sort of scrubbing motion with the sharpie. (4) Peel tape and reuse in the reverse direction. (5) Repeat step (3), peel off tape and you’re done!

too symmetrical to be Beni Ouarain… Great HACK!

  2. Dawn says:

Bravo! to the artist and all those who appreciate the realm of creativity.

Yeeeeeeah… The originals look kind of terrible. Your hack is much more aesthetically pleasing, but that sadly isn’t saying much. Then again, I’d have to see how it looks with the rest of your room to pass judgement.

I’m filing this under “creative, but not for me.”

If you saw the real Beni Ourain carpets, it looks exactly like that.http://kishaniperera.com/2013/02/aesthetically-speaking-beni-ourain-rugs/

  5. Wow. Apparently y’all have never heard the saying “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”. Also it clearly isn’t a “mistake” as the person posting is happy with it. I hope some of you realise what an ass you look criticising someone so pointlessly.

Anyway, good job and yay for sharpies! :)

  6. Kate says:

This unfortunately looks like a seven year old got a hold of her mom’s Sharpies and went to town…..what a mistake. Yikes.

  7. Anonymous says:

I like it and is a great springboard for alternative patterns and surfaces!

  8. I’ve been looking for one of this rug at an afordable price for months!!!! So thanks for sharing this great DIY!
I will do it for sure :)

  9. Anonymous says:

Well, hey, on the bright side, this will make a good discussion piece for guests entering your home!

  10. Faye says:

doesnt smell because of the chemical smell of sharpie?

  11. Thanks for the feature Jules! To answer the comment above, we’ve been using the rug for a month now and the sharpie doesn’t rub off at all. I don’t think it has gotten wet yet (it is in a bedroom) but I don’t think anything will happen if it does since it is a sharpie.

i wonder what willhappen with wear and if wet

  13. Nadia says:

    Is beutifull!!!!

  14. Anonymous says:

Even the authentic ones look terrible.

  15. Donna Cole says:

I like it! It looks pretty authentic IMO.

  16. Anonymous says:

Wow. I have to agree with you, Anonymous #1. This looks terrible.

This isn’t as impressive or neat as previous hacks involving painted chevrons, etc. on rugs. It mostly just looks like you drew all over your carpet. Maybe some sort of fabric paint would look more ‘finished’?
