Expedit bookshelf turned rustic TV cabinet/bookshelf

Materials: Large Expedit bookshelf, oil based primer, homemade chalkboard paint, sandpaper, plumbing pipe, old barn door, eye bolts

Description: Cut out one shelf from the IKEA Expedit bookshelf and removed 5 dividers. Painted with oil based primer – let dry for at least 24 hours. Mixed unsanded grout with paint – about 1 tablespoon per cup of paint. Painted several coats – decided I didn’t like the color and painted it again ; )

Sanded it to distress it. Screwed plumbing pipe to the top so a barn door can slide back and forth. Attached barn door with eye bolts. Secured to wall with several brackets!

  1. What a transformation. I loved it! Looks so pretty.

I especially love the color with the rustic/reclaimed wood. However, when the door is fully slid open doesn’t it block the window or get in the way? It would be cool to see a similar setup with a door the slides downwards instead. Great job overall.

Since we only use the TV to watch movies occasionally we don’t find that the door gets in the way or block the window since when we are using it, it’s dark and the shades are closed. We aren’t TV people hence covering it. Thanks.

Is the original Expedit black? What is the name of the yellow paint you used?

We love this! And are actually trying a version of it on our unit. How thick piping did you use? Does the door slide along the piping alright? I am wondering if the weight of the door makes it hard to slide?
