Hacker help: How to Dress My-Shelf?

Photo: IKEA.com

Materials: RANSBY Dressing table

Description: I want to put the RANSBY dressing table in my bedroom, but wall space in the room is limited and I also need to get some bookcases in. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to hack the RANSBY into/onto/under? a bookcase (or bookcases). The ceilings are quite high in the bedroom, so the shelves could be quite tall, but I am worried about stability (don’t want the whole thing to topple over). Any suggestions?

  1. If it were me, I’d first add a some support bracing on the back side under the legs, either a horizontal board on the back edge, or diagonal supports from the legs to the underside of the desk. You could then add your bookcases above, supported by the desk. Always use a bookcase safety strap which securely attaches the bookcase to the wall to prevent it from toppling over.

You could also just build floating bookcases, shelves or cubes over the desk, secured directly to the wall, if your wall will support them.

You could just put an Expedit shelf on the wall above your table. That would be the easiest option. I wouldn’t stack anything on this table directly, maybe by reinforcing like Kevin said… but I don’t know that table, so I can’t tell if it would work.
Or maybe you could build around the table? Like having small bookcases next to the table and put one on top: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2009/05/project-cat-runway.html
Your table is much smaller, so you might be able to put the small expedits and a big on on top which you could fix to the wall…
I like this one as well: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/02/expedit-wardrobe-with-plants.html with the desk in the middle… and if you have space, you could just put another on on top…
    Keep us posted! Good luck.

OT, but seeing that table gives me the idea for integrating a computer/laptop…

Two small Billies (40cm) seem to fit nicely ontop of it. Just secure them properly to the wall and your desk.
