Hacker help: Harlig for Billy?

Materials: Billy Bookcase, Harlig doors

Description: Hello,

I recently discovered the various built-in bookcases that can be made with simple Billys, and have decided to try it out.

However, the Billy doors are all too high for my configuration (the TV will be on this built in, and needs to be lower than what the doors would allow for). Also, Billy doors are not the cheapest and I will need 6 of them…

I was thinking of using Harlig doors, which are cheaper, and come in 40×70, which would be perfect for me.

Since I have never done the slightest modification to IKEA furniture before, I would like to know: would the Harlig doors be compatible with the Billy bookcase? Will I have to drill extra holes into the Billy for the hinges to fit properly?

    Thanks a lot!
I had the exact same question. The Billy doors are very expensive compared to the price of the bookcase.

I did the exact same thing with a 80cm Billy and two 40×195 cm Härlig doors and a 80cm Billy with two 40×70 and 40×92 cm doors. You will have to drill extra holes, as the Faktum hinges are not the same size and position than Billy hinges. I mesured the distance on some of my Faktum elements at home.

Laura, which height was your 80cm Billy and which doors did you use?
I have a 80×106 and I love the idea of adding cheaper Härlig doors.

      Hello, I used a 195×40 cm doors on a 202x80cm Billy.
In the kitchen “area” there would be nothing that fits the size of a 106cm Billy … but if you’re able to shorten it a bit, you could use 90×40 cm doors
