Materials: HEMNES 3 Drawer Dresser
Description: My husband and I needed a vanity with storage for our master bath remodel. We couldn'€™t find the one we liked at the local hardware stores and online, so I searched IKEA Hackers for an idea and sure enough found a vanity made out of HEMNES Dresser! Since our bathroom only had one sink, we decided to use smaller three drawer dresser.
1. Assemble the side panels.
2. Cut each leg so that the vanity will be your desired height. We used a circular saw to do this.(The height of our vanity is 36".)
3. Assemble the rest of the dresser except the drawers and the top.
4. Install the countertop and the sink. (We hired a professional since we wanted to use the same marble we used in the kitchen.)
5. Reconfigure the top two drawers as shown in the pictures. We used the leftover wood pieces found in our garage as needed. (We were too lazy to make all the pieces a same height, as you can see.)
We absolutely love how our vanity turned out! I was a little concerned about whether marble would be too heavy for this piece, but we'€™ve been using the vanity for almost four months now and so far we haven'€™t had any problem at all. In fact, we love the HEMNES series so much that we hacked another HEMNES cabinet to add even more storage for our master bath! Happy Hacking!

Very nice idea- I liked it a lot. One issue though is that there is no toe kick. I imagine it might get annoying to brush your teeth or wash your hands without being able to put your feet under the vanity. You'll always be leaning forwards. Just a thought. Otherwise, great project.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind comment! Regarding the toe kick, I was also a little concerned once we cut the legs, but there is actually a 2-inch gap between the floor and the bottom of the vanity. So far, neither one of us has had issue with it.

Doesn't IKEA sell Hemnes bathroom cabinets with drawers and sinks & pipes that won't take up all the storage space? Less work and effort for similar effect, just an observation...
ReplyDeleteYES, THEY DO!!! And, here in California, I believe they were already available when we were looking for a vanity last year. But the main reason why we decided to go with "more work and effort" route was that we wanted the vanity to be made of same material (pine) in same finish (stain) as the HEMNES cabinet we already decided to use for this master bath (glass-door cabinet with 4 drawers, which we also hacked). I know that's a minor issue for many, but it was important for us (although we ended up spending about twice as much as the HEMNES sink cabinet).

DeleteI think that's very recent Anonymous. They redid all their bathroom fixtures this year. Also, since they used standard fixtures and vanity, I'm not sure if the Ikea ones would work, would they?
