Hacker help: How to hack a single Expedit and desk

Photo: IKEA.com
Materials: Expedit and unknown

Description: Hi, I'm trying to make a single version of the Expedit desk hack here.

So I'll start with a 4x1 Expedit in white and I'd like to add a desk the same as in the link but only 44cm in width to match the Expedit. My issue is I can't find anything to suit it. I've looked into having a shelf with legs or even two shelves to form the desk pictured but they are coming up short in the dimensions. Am I missing something? Has this been done before?

Please help!

It is for an 21.5" imac so i may add a keyboard pull out tray or something else if you have any ideas??

  2. I think that it's possible to hack a MALM occasional table. It has 36cm depth but it will look clean because it has the same lines.

  3. And how about the Malm dressing? It's a bit more expensive than the Malm occasional table, but it's a bit deeper (41cm) and comes with a drawer (that could be hacked as a keyboard pull).

  4. Matthew - have a look at this hack we posted last month:

If you decide to horizontally rip the desk attachment in two, you're going to have to deal somehow with closing up the hollow opening that will create. In the hack I linked to above, you can see how we affixed wood blocks inside the hollow of the desk attachment. You might be able to use a similar technique for what you're doing.

  5. Try the new "cheaper" LACK sofa table. It has an extra shelf that can be saved for a later hack or to make the table tall enough for desk height. It's the right width, but just a little shorter than desk height. It should be pretty easy though.

  6. Wouldn't a 2x2 Expedit http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20135300/ work just loose 2 of the sides and the middle parts. Might be kinda weak compared to the desk. You might be able to get the brackets and things that go with the desk from the parts center

  7. What about using an Expedit 2x2, using the thick side section, and the thick top section.
