Materials: BJURSTA Bar Table
Description: We have been looking around for ages for a good rabbit house but of course none of them met the specs which we had in mind nor were they very "quality for money". So, we hacked! We luckily got a new (larger and more oval shaped) wood kitchen table from my partner's sister for 25 Euros (super cheap and beautiful natural wood) so naturally we were thrilled to have the opportunity to turn our Bjusta bar table into a much needed Bunny house for our two best friends.
We used:
- a whole lotta love!
- Flexa paint
- leftover laminate flooring from our apartment
- the Bjursta table (of course! But chopped in half :))
- extra wood from our local hardware store as well as trimming
- some hook locks and new handles and hinges
- chicken wire
- 6 kitchen tiles (rabbits like to sit on them in the summer to cool down)
We pretty much sawed the table in half down the middle. We used one half for the top and one half for the bottom and built a shelf in between.
We also built the door frames ourselves and placed chicken wire in the center for air and of course to make the socialising between us all a bit easier ;)
We added some trim to the top as well as all around the bottom to add some charm and to make the piece not look so straight-lined and fit more with our livingroom decor.

The cage is very nice but I hope your bunny is not in there all the time as it looks MUCH too small and low for this purpose. The bunny is not able to jump and stand on its hind legs to look around. 2qm for every bunny is species-appropriate. If the cage is open most of the time it´s not a problem.
ReplyDeleteThey can stand up inside (each level is higher than the standard rabbit cage you buy in the pet store, although this is not really visual in the photos unfortunately...should have taken one with them in it :) and when we're home they have 90 square meters of playroom ;)

DeleteSooo... how's that working out with bunny peeing and pooing in there? Poo is not the problem, it's the pee- it looks like just wood flooring, so pee will just soak right in and stink up the place pretty fast.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about chewing? My bunnies love chewing on various wood things, like the ramp to their second story, so I had to make it out of bunny-approved wood.
Hi! We installed a "toilet" for them which can easily be removed and cleaned and we use very good absorbant rabbit stuff for toilets :) So no smell and very clean. Our girls know where their poopy box is haha. We leave the hutch open for them when they are out hopping about the house and in a year they've never peed or pooped anywhere else! So we are pretty content with that. And chew toys they have a plenty. Since we are currently doing renos, there is no shortage of nice assortments of wood for them to dig their teeth and claws into.
