Ikea Delay
Materials: Ordning, Music PCB Echo Base, Heath Glue, Cd Cake box
Description: First of all, What the hell is the Ikea Delay?
Well it's a guitar effect built inside a Ordning.
Instructions
- Buy the Delay pcb from Music PCB
- Buy the electronic components and the knobs from Mouser electronics or Musik Ding or Banzai or your usual supplier.
- Assemble the pcb, I built a "full optional" Echo base with most of the mods suggested by music pcb (Tail, Kill wsitch, Lfo mods, ecc) plus a starve knob (is the big one)
EXPEDIT Wardrobe
Materials: 1 EXPEDIT TV storage unit, 1 EXPEDIT Shelving unit (1x4), different shelf inserts, clothes rail
Description: Inspired by two EXPEDIT Hacks (EXPEDIT wardrobe with plants & EXPEDITion Small-Room-Closet) I've decided to build my own wardrobe.
Driftwood Lamps
Materials: IKEA lamps, drift wood, drill
Description: I saw this hack at a rental vacation home in Corsica, France, and just had to share it. Seems pretty straight-forward.
1. Choose IKEA table lamp (or floor lamp if more ambitious) where the post can be unscrewed from the base, or the top can be taken off.
2. Collect lots of driftwood.
3. Drill a hole through the middle of each piece of driftwood.
4. Arrange driftwood on the lamp post.
5. Reassemble lamp.
One of the lamps is an IKEA lamp, the other one might be different, but the picture turned out better, so I'm still including it.
Enjoy.

Pantry Kitchen Ceiling & Walls
Materials: Panels, High Gloss Abstrakt
Description: We have a very small pantry kitchen. However, we thought we had high ceilings. To get more cabinet space up high.
When we stripped our kitchen down to the bones we learned that our walls were made out of cement (hard to get rid off) & our ceiling can't be touched (building permits).
Expedit sound center
Materials: Red 2x4 Expedit, Ikea drywall screws, Dioder lights, duck tape
Description: I have seen a lot of folks on here use the Expedit as record storage but I don't have a large collection and I wanted something that would fit into a small corner space.
I liked the glossy red Expedit and figured with the 2x4 size I could not only house my records but also my turntable, speakers, iPod speaker system
To get the look I wanted I built the Expedit according to instructions but left out the last short divider so I would have a double length shelf at the top of the unit on which to rest my turntable and speakers.
You do have to secure the long shelf to the divider beneath it and I have seen other folks cut the dowels down so they are flush with the shelf but I decided screws would make it more secure.
Melltorp to Sewing Desk
Materials: Melltorp, Effektiv door.
Description: A sewing machine sitting on top of a desk isn't the most ergonomic or comfortable. Hands are perched in the air to reach the sewing bed, kinda like The Thriller dance. Amy's idea was to mount the Effectiv door panel below the surface of the desk and create an under table support for the Bernina. This would let the sewing bed sit flush to the desk.
Bolts were used to mount the panel so that it can be easily adjustable up and down to assure the surface was flat.

Molger & sons
Materials: 2 x Molger shelving units, saw, hammer, drill, wood glue
Description:
1. Get two Molger shelving units.
2. Cut (saw) both according to need (I wanted to fit a tall lava lamp, so I wanted to max shelf distance).
3. Drill holes to align posts. Now, I failed getting the holes right first, however, adding extra holes and nails made alignment easy (pix).
Sultan goes outdoor and back under the bed..
Materials: Sultan Lade
Description: As I recently changed my slatted frame that was in my Malm bed (Sultan Lade) with one that is adjustable, I thought it would be nice to use the wood parts for something.
So I used all of the parts to create 2 things: a garden rack to hold plants and other garden utensils. I painted the parts with some weather proof finish and built it together. On the side facing the wall I used an Observator bracket to make it more stable.
The second thing was for my wife - she has a lot of shoes and boots and ever searching for some space ;-)
Folding table + bench
Materials: Björkudden, two foldable shelf brackets, hooks
Description: Having my girlfriend move into my apartment we had a spare Björkudden table which we temporarily stored at our balcony.
This balcony being only one meter wide wasn't big enough to place the table as a whole.
With the desire to be able to eat and relax on the balcony I wanted to create a space saving table which I could move and remove depending on the sun and rain.
See you at the Singapore Mini Maker Faire
The Maker Faire is coming to Singapore! And ... I've been invited to give a presentation on IKEA Hacking. I am honoured, thrilled and nervous all at the same time. And most of all, very excited to bring IKEA Hacking to a broader audience. Singapore, I hope to see more hacks for you after next weekend! Like the flagship Maker Faire, this mini faire is a celebration of science, engineering, creativity and the DIY spirit. It is Singapore's first and an event of the Singapore Science Festival.
Lots will be happening in the 2 days. It will be jammed with DIYers, Makers, thinkers and crafters. Don't you just love it when creativity and energy is in the air? I can already catch a whiff of something being made.
My presentation on IKEA Hacking will be on Aug 4, 2 - 3pm. Here is the line up of presentations and interesting workshops, including one on LifeHacking, which you can sign up for.
If you're in Singapore, drop by to say "hi!". I look forward to meeting you.

White concrete wrapped Ikea kitchen island
Materials: Faktum Cabinets, Rational drawers Besta Push Openers
Description: Used standard Faktum Cabinets with a custom re-enforced ground frame to hold the weight of concrete benchtop. Used Besta push openers to act as drawer openers so I can maintain a flush appearance on the front of the kitchen island.

Standing to hanging lamp
Materials: KULLA standing lamp, iron wire
Description: This weekend I sold my antique chandelier, so I was chasing the city to find a new hanging lamp. All kinds and sorts I have considered; the €1428 Hexagonal chandelier designed by Jules Wabbes, €70 vintage retro lamp on the Dutch Ebay, even a €139 industrial imitation came along.
I have no idea how it happened, but as soon the antique chandelier left our house, I immediately start taking apart this standing IKEA lamp. I unscrewed the Kulla standard. Placed the shade-holder upside down to the fitting. I drilled a whole in the standard and placed and Iron wire between the standard and the ceiling. That's about it.
I must admit that I was kind of proud to see the whole thing hanging.
See more of the Kulla hanging pendant.

Hemnes pieces to Built In Media Wall
Materials: Hemnes bookshelves, tv unit and glass door cabinet
Description: We were looking for a built in in our basement family room so we chose some pieces from the Hemnes line, spaced them apart and finished the tops, bottoms and spaces in between to make it look like one large unit.

Embellished Lack Side Table
Materials: Lack Side Table, corbels, nailhead trim, sand paper, wood filler and glue, spray paint, metallic paint
Description: With less than $45 and a little elbow grease, I transformed my $10 table that was destined for the dumpster into one of my new favorite pieces of furniture.
I started out by sanding down the "wood". The surface is actually a very thin veneer so it doesn't take much but does need to be thoroughly sanded. After whipping off all the excess dust, I flipped the table over and glued the corbels to the inside of each leg. Be sure to let them dry COMPLETELY before the next step.
Lova Is For Bee's Too
Materials: 1 Lova, 6-8 zip ties, 1 tree branch, 1 binder clip & 1-2 rubber bands.
Description: It has been a hot one this summer in the Midwest and the bees in our hive have been roasting in the afternoon sun. But now with the Lova they have gotten a reprieve from the afternoon heat.
1. Assemble the Lova as the instructions indicate.
2. Find the angle you want over your bee hive or other item in need of shade.
3. Place the Lova in the holder and zip tie to the fence in your desired angle.
Recycle Bin Dresser
Materials: RETUR Recycling bins, Lack Shelf, Wall Anchors, Screws, Cordless Drill, Table or Circular Saw, Spray Paint
Description: I soooooo hate folding clothes. I used to have two piles of clothes on the floor, one for dirty clothes and one for clean.
I wanted to create something that didn't take up any valuable floor space. While visiting IKEA I had an inspiration.

Vittsjo Shelving Hack
![]() |
| Photo: IKEA.com |
Materials: White spray paint, wood plywood sheves, Minwax stain
Description: Kate of Centsational Girl wanted a space to store books, art supplies, games, a TV as well as replace an old bulky laminate media unit. Enter the Vittsjo but it was not in her colour of choice.
A few spray cans later, the two tall Vittsjo shelving units are white. And the glass shelves are replaced with dark stained plywood.
See more of the Vittsjo makeover.

Billy/Benno Cubby Unit
Materials: 6 Billy Bookcases, 2 Benno TV Benches, 18 coat hooks
Description: Build the Benno TV benches, leaving out the drawers.
Build the Billies, flipping all shelves and the top/bottom upside down as you go.
I chose to omit the back panel too. Do not use the shelves in what is now the bottom half of the unit.
Place 3 upside-down Billies on each Benno, anchoring them to the wall. Screw coat hooks into the sides and back wall of each cubby.

How to: Extend UTBY Legs
| Photo: IKEA.com |
Description: If you want a free standing cooking island with a countertop of more than 90cm you need to extend the UTBY legs since they are only 16cm .
16cm (legs) + 70 cm (cabinet) + 4 cm (countertop) = 90 cm
To get to 95cm (or more) you can extend the screws of the feet with a 4cm piece of an M8 screw and an M8 x 30 coupling screw. Both you can get at the hardware store for almost no money.
I bought a 200cm M8 screw for 2 EUR and cut 8 pieces out of it. Together with the 8 coupling screws I've paid 15 EUR for parts.

IKEA IVAR Distressed Farm Chairs
Materials: IVAR chair (pine), Behr enamel paint, 80 grit sandpaper, and steel wool.
Description: I recently acquired a farm table (the one shown in the photos) and needed some chairs to match. I couldn't find any I liked, so I decided to make my own using IKEA IVAR chairs made from pine wood. Here are the steps I used to distress each chair:
AirPlay Ikea Butcher's Block
Materials: Bekvam Butcher's Trolley
Description: Brian sneaks in an outdoor amp and an Apple AirPort Express
Floating Gallery Wall for Under $60
Materials: DIGNITET curtain wire, RIKTIG clips, Thin Gauge Wire, Screen Mold, Spray Paint, Grommets, Art Work
Description: 1. Screen Mold (1/4" x 3/4" x 8') was selected to make the frames.
2. After determining the size of the frames needed, screen mold was cut on a 45 degree angle with the chop saw.
3. Frames were glued with super glue.

Small camping table
Materials: Item: Brada Laptop Support, hand saw.
Description: I have been in search for a small camping table to use on the ground. This table will be for having a flat surface to place beer & Chips, candle, drinks etc on when sitting on ground level.
Zoo storage for furry friends
Material: Ikea Gorm shelf, 4 elastic bands for fitness
Description: I took down 6 boards that made up the 3 shelves and then I painted the different elements that make up the shelf.
Then I set the top and the bottom shelf. I nailed the 6 boards on the front and back of the shelf (in purple in the picture) to attach the elastic.
Bed in the air!
SAFETY WARNING: This hack is not proven to be safe. Do not attempt to replicate this unless you have a professional to ensure that it is structurally sound and safe for a child's use. ~ Jules
Materials: Kura bed - Sniglar changing table
Description: During last year's house renovation, we created a new room for our son. The problem we faced was that his IKEA Kura bed could not fit inside the new room. So I decided to modify the Kura bed.
The modification involved three stages:
Firstly the bed had to be raised high enough so that the door of the bedroom could open without issues.
Secondly the bed had to be shortened by 8cm in length so it could fit near the wardrobe. And finally the bed had to be made safer because of the new height.

Der Schtandund Vorkin
Materials: PAX wardrobe door
Description: Ladies and gentlemen, this is Der Schtandund Vorkin: a highly mobile, ultra convertible standing desk. The table top is made from a red Ikea Pax wardrobe door and is supported by finely sanded and finished poplar.
The legs are Speed-Rail bars, mounted onto speedy castors. The desk is custom sized to the worker and suitable to those who would rather stand at a bar during their labor hours.
The upright standing orientation provides the worker with increased creative flow of ideas from brain to fingertips and is not intended for seat sitters (though it will accommodate a bar stool).
Ikea Rast Turned Campaign Chest
Materials: Ikea Rast 3 Drawer Chest, Behr High Gloss Paint in Sugar Plum, 3 Campaign Style Drawer Pulls, 3 Packages of 2" Brass Flat Corners, Paint Brush, Tube of Elmer's Wood Filler Max, Sanding Sponge, Drill
Description: I love campaign furniture but the antique pieces are so hard to come by! I decided to hack the Ikea Rast, giving it the campaign style with a modern, bright-colored twist! Follow the steps below to make your own.
Dyed Ombre Lamp
Materials: HEMMA Base Lamp, IKEA shade (about 1 yr old) but any cloth IKEA shade could work
Description: I ombre dyed a lamp shade and painted the base for a lamp makeover! I started with a 5 gallon bucket (which is a must need for crafters) and filled it with a tiny amount of water.
I wanted a turquoise color so I mixed Blue and the Green Dye together in my bucket. Then I placed my lampshade into the dye bucket, moving it up and down in the dye a few times to get it good and saturated.

Jara Lamp Shade Over Hanging Ceiling Light
![]() |
| Photo: IKEA.com |
Description: We had an existing chandelier in our dining room that was ugly, so we stripped it down to the bulbs (removed the frame and some hanging glass).
Not wanting to deal with doing electrical work covering it up was the best - and cheapest - solution.
The Jara was the only shade that would fit over the existing chandelier. Here's what we did:
What's a kitchen without an island
| Photo: IKEA.com |
Description: I have a decent sized kitchen with a poor countertop layout. I combined the Norden Sideboard with a Varde countertop that overhangs to give me a kitchen island with seating. This is something that is sorely lacking from the Ikea lineup.
Here's how:
Assemble the Norden Sideboard as the instructions say but skip the step instructing you to install the top.

Cubic Besta
before and after
| Photo: IKEA.com |
Description: I had a Besta book shelf I wanted to close somewhat to hide a bit of mess but, due to the close heater, I could not install standard doors.
Finally I found a new inreda hinge (currently sold in Italy - Milan only - as part of the new TV system roll out).
This new hinge allows you to use Besta drawer panels without the inner drawer... brilliant!
