Materials: VIKA BYSKE, VIKA MOLIDEN, EKBY TRYGGVE
Description: I needed a new desk and wanted something modern that would fit in front of the window in my apartment. An Ikea had just opened in my city so I went shopping. The VIKA BYSKE table top had the exact right look to it but it wasn't the right size. I bought it anyways and figured I would give it a try. I selected the VIKA MOLIDEN legs to go underneath. It was too big for the space I wanted it to fit in by about 18 Inches (45 cm).
I took it to Home Depot and asked if they could cut 9 inches off either end. They did it and didn't even charge me a thing.
I took it home and drilled new holes to mount the VIKA MOLIDEN legs and attached them to the bottom.
I sanded down the edges and I had myself a brand new desk, the exact size I needed. This is where the next problem came in. I had way too much stuff that was going to have to sit on the floor under the desk or on the desktop. It made me wish I had bought a different desk with more places to hide things behind or inside it.
Back to Home Depot and Ikea. I picked up a EKBY TRYGGVE shelf, four galvanized iron floor flange's and two galvanized iron pipes. I attached a floor flange to either end of each of the pipes to make my shelf mount. I screwed one of the flanges to the top right side of the shelf and one to the top left. The shelf attached to the bottom of the desk at the back where it's against the wall and out of sight.
As you can see I now have a shelf with a set of speakers, a hard drive, label printer, surge protector (mounted directly to the desk), power supplies, cables, all kinds of ugly stuff that I'd rather not keep on top of the desk or on the floor.

Not into this idea - too much stuff on the shelf is just sitting there piled on and will eventually fall off. Cables get yanked on and down it all comes...
ReplyDeleteYou wanted your speakers *under* the desk for what reason? Maximum sound-muffability?
Also, what's that thing on the left side under the desk? A label printer or something? If so, have fun crawling under there to retrieve the labels.
And get those cables in order.
Sorry, but this just doesn't make sense.
Doesn't really make sense to me either, why someone would buy a desk that doesn't fit in the first place and then go through so much trouble to and put extra money into finding a non-perfect solution.

I really like this idea of a hidden shelf for all my wrapped up cords and the surge protector. I probably wouldn't put all that the owner has on the shelf. It would be great to keep all my connecting cables and wires up off the floor. Especially for those of us who have long legs and are always kicking at the cords under the desk. Not to mention how much easier it would be to clean around the area with a completely open floor space.

DeleteIt mounts under the desk. Can't remember the name, but it's sold at most Ikeas.
Its a good idea but the implementation needs some improvement if you want your stuff to last.

1. The Airport Extreme(AE) that you have at the bottom, vents its heat thru the top which means that the drive on top of it will get much warmer that it would normally be. It also means that the AE could take harm from it,
2. The drive should be placed so that the vents are unobstructed and since it also produces heat it shouldnt be placed on top of the AE,
3. Whats that on top of the drive?
4. Cables that are wound tight together will produce heat that can damage the cables,
5. Speakers UNDER the desk???
You are correct about the problems with heating of the electronics, yet it's hot *air* which rises, actually.
DeleteHeat travels from areas of higher temperature to areas of lower temperature. Sorry, I'm a former scientist and just had to get that in there.

DeleteI like it! But why not use the off-cuts for the shelf? Did they get left behind at Home Depot? ;^)
ReplyDeleteSince the desktop is composite (made up of smaller pieces), the cut-offs might not have had the necessary structural strength to make shelves.
