Hacker help: Adding wheels to Galant T-Legs?

Photo: IKEA.com

Materials: Galant Table with T-Legs, Threaded Casters

Description: This is a plan, not an accomplishment. I will be surprised if this hasn't been done already.

The Galant T-Legs appear to have feet threaded on for adjustments to compensate for uneven floors.

I plan to to unscrew the feet all the way and screw in some threaded casters.

Has anyone seen this? I have searched high and low and have yet to find anything. Seems like a simple hack, but I can't find any information on it.

Does anyone have a T-Leg laying around that can help me test? I would like to know if the feet can be unscrewed and if so what the thread size is. That way I can have casters ready for when the desk arrives.

Thanks!

  1. I did something similar with a broder shelf. I do not have a Galant to test, but the broder feet have "M12"-screws. If you are able to compare, that could be the solution.
I got my wheels from Amazon.de in Germany, but I am sure you will be able to find some on Amazon.com to, search for "threaded swivel".
Good luck with finding the correct measurements and be prepared for it to be metric. If you have to resolve to Amazon.de, search for "Lenkrolle" together with "gewinde" or "gewindebolzen".

    Good Luck!

  2. for sure you can unscrew the feet and replace with wheels. my 2 cents contribution, go for wheels with brakes!!

  3. Ray, since you live in AZ, unscrew one foot and take it down to HomeDepot or Lowes. They will have a thread gauge in their hardware section so that you can verify the size and thread pitch. To double check for the proper casters you can then use that same thread guage to verify the caster threads.

  4. I got some casters from Home Depot-they were a little loose so I wrapped the threaded ends with masking tape and they work fine! I also had to saw off about 3/4 inch from the threaded ends so the casters would screw in all the way.
After I did this I went to Ikea and found some Besta (I think) black plastic casters which were larger and cheaper than the Home Depot ones. These worked well but also needed the masking tape.

  5. I would do something a bit more HEAVY-DUTY. I'd suggest cutting a base plate with two larger TAPPED holes for casters that will take a bit more weight. Used the existing holes (where the feet are) to mount the base plate to the foot of the galant table leg. I have had too many tables with small casters, buckle and become useless because they can't handle the weight.

  6. I went through this research a few months ago. These legs have a standard M10 threaded insert. Casters like these should do the trick for you:

    Best of luck!
