Materials: 3 Granas Chairs
Description: Hi I'm Ashli from Mini Manor Blog.
We needed a bench, it had to have a back, and I new that I wanted something with an industrial look!
I love the combination of metal and wood. I was searching Craigslist for benches when I came across some Ikea Granas Chairs, they had great clean lines, and the cross backs made me very happy ;).
We found 3 chairs for $25!
We bought 3 1x6's each board was 6 feet long.
We stained them a medium walnut color.
We removed the wicker seats from their metal frames, and were able to use the existing holes (for the screws that held the wicker seats in place) to screw in and secure the boards to the chair.
And for the finishing touch we simply stenciled on a little instruction . . . SIT.
I think that an added shelf on the bottom would also be great if you were planning on using it as a hall bench, a quick place to stash your shoes or maybe a basket or two!

DeleteWhy would you say that! It's clean and simple, and very pretty. I'm a huge metal and wood lover myself and this is a great easy hack with plenty of potentiel for personnal taste improvement.

Wonderful! I am so in awe of the creative minds that can look at chairs and see a bench, etc.. And the stencil adds a perfect finishing touch. My grandchildren would sit down just to prove they could read it!

ReplyDeleteLooks cool, but the text is just entirely cliche in these "modern" homes. It even has a period, which is just overkill on the cliche meter. Looks really awesome, though, regardless.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea but IMHO a bench should have four feets, not 12. Otherwise, it gets difficult to clean under and it is not forgiving when used one an uneven floor.
ReplyDeleteIt's great! Have you thought in use more wood to do a shelf underneath the bench? That would take out of sight a lot of bars under the bench (which in my opinion is a little bit overwhelming), and you can use it as additional storage for pillows, blankets, boxes...

ReplyDeleteI love this idea but am curious: I must be overlooking something obvious ... You said you used 3 1x6 boards that were 6 feet long, but I only see one, or did you stack them one on top of the other? The board in the photo looks like a single 1x6. Thanks! and I like your stencil. Nothing cliche about it, not even the period!
ReplyDeleteThe depth of the seat is 16 inches. So we needed 3, 6 inch boards to fill the space, the middle board we cut down to 4 inches with the table saw!

It's a great hack. I agree with Eva's suggestion, above, about putting matching boards across the base. Perfect for storage and also would eliminate a bit of the "busy-ness" of the extra legs. It looks terrific, though, and is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI love it...a simple and practical idea. If the busy-ness of the legs is a problem you could always at a fabric "skirt" and use inverted box pleats to make the skirt look more modern than rustic. The shelf on the bottom is a great idea too.

ReplyDeleteI think that it's a great hack. It also offers the opportunity for someone to "borrow" the idea and tweek it a bit to make it their very own. Excellent!
ReplyDeletethe bench is way too close to the door for my taste. i would have to move it elsewhere to make it easier to go in and out of the door.
