Materials: Billy Bookcase
Description: We have quite an extensive book collection and didn't want boring bookcases. We also didn't have a ton of money.
Base board heater prevented putting anything directly on the floor in front of the wall. We screwed a board to the back wall (same as is done with the lower Ikea kitchen cabinets). We then bought metal flanges and pipe from the hardware store and set a board across from the wall to the flanges. Set the bookcases on the board and secured.
I built the cover boxes with trim boards and painted to match. Carpet and chairs were from obtained locally online. Easy peasy. And we don't think it looks bad either.

ReplyDeleteWhat I like about this is that you get a built in feel at the top, without needing to add shelving to the top of the bookshelves. My only critisms would be to either paint the baseboard heater a different colour, or add a perforated cover of some sort between the flange covers, so it really disguses the fact it's on stilts.
ReplyDeleteOverall, a great idea! I've baseboard heating myself, and never thought to raise items up like that. And I suppose something similar could be done to raise an item only a little bit, to overcome an extra high baseboard profile.

ReplyDeleteBettina's comment wouldn't really make it anymore efficient, with an exhaust hole unless you also kept it on the stilts.
ReplyDeleteFor air to circulate, it needs somewhere to both come and go. (circulate... as in circle)
While exhaust holes would help, you would still need the stilts to draw cool air in from the bottom.
As heat rises it draws in cool air to be warmed and rise again, bringing in more cool air. Thermal Dynamics.
