Description: Hi, I moved in together with my boyfriend about a year ago. It's a tiny apartment and we have too much stuff.
Our biggest problem at the moment is that before we moved in, we had already bought PS chairs from the 2011 collection (saga). We didn't have a table yet, until one day we were in IKEA and they were selling out the Skoghall dining set for just €50, which is cheaper than most tables, so we bought it.

So basically my question is this: are there any ways I can use these chairs as not-chairs? Like for storage or...
Important: They are not stackable!
Also IKEA's own idea of hanging them up and using them as shelves is not something we can do as we can't hang anything on the walls in the living room and the bedroom is too small for that.

I have the opposite problem. We bought four PS chairs to go with out Bjursta table and hate them so much that we're looking for an alternative. They wound up being too heavy, too awkward, too short in the back, too large overall to fit four under the table, too long/wide in the seat, and too pointy on the legs. The only thing I like is how they LOOK! Don't hack up your Skoghall chairs until you're sure you love the PS!
ReplyDeleteOh I really love them, that's why I bought them :) They are the best chairs, I like sitting on them, I hate the skoghall chairs, wish we could swap, haha! Hope you find a good alternative!
DeleteSell them or pay it forward to someone else. Don't hold onto Ikea stuff that you won't immediately use, or you have no idea _when_ you'll use - they are NOT heirloom-pieces. The key to survival in a small space when it comes to furniture is to have pieces that serve a purpose, and the extra chairs are serving none (outside of being in your way and impeding you from enjoying your extra couch).
ReplyDeleteI second this. My husband is a save-everything-we-might-possibly-need sort of person, but it doesn't work in our small house. Yeah you *might* need them in the future, but until then they're just going to stress you out. Pick the chairs you like and thrift the others. It's made our house much more restful.
DeleteIf it's the black chair posted, just take the back off (it looks like it bolts in) and upholster the top to use as an ottoman or bench.
ReplyDeleteI could also see using it for closet or shoe storage. Again, take off the back and then attach a cut piece of wood on the top of the bottom supports to make another little shelf.
This is the most confusing part of your post: "We never use those chairs. However I don't want to get rid of them." If you're not using them then why are you holding onto them? It's just wasting space!
ReplyDeleteElizabeth's idea is probably the best. If the chairs are not slanted you could also use them as a coffee table base once you remove the back. Place four in a square or six in a rectangle, and attach a plain board on the seat tops. You could also use in a closet like Elizabeth suggested, put a board across the seat tops, but also across the bars on the bottom for a second shelf.
so you are using the black PS chairs with the blonde Skoghall table, right? The skoghall chairs have a neat shape, and it would be interesting to disassemble them to remove the back legs, and have S shaped pieces left. could you stack the S's on their sides to make a bookshelf of sorts (that stands on the floor)? could you still sit in the S shapes as a rocking/game chair directly on the floor?

DeleteYou could use two of them as "Dressboys". You might wanna just type that into the search here on ikeahackers, it's a previous hack. it includes cutting the chairs in half though. But so it's space-saving and such a good thing to have...
ReplyDeleteI've seen that idea and as cool as it is, I don't really want to cut the chairs down, and I have 4 of them, so that means 8 dress boys for just me and my boyfriend... Thank you anyway for suggesting it :)
DeleteConsider getting rid of the extras, but if you can bear it, consider using them as side tables. Two could be side tables for that sofa you want and two could be bed side tables.
ReplyDeleteIf you truly never use them, then why do you want to keep them? I would either sell them and put the money towards the sofa you do want, or donate them to a charity shop.

A few things you could try
ReplyDeleteMaybe take the seatings out and just use the sides to make a nice bench for your hallway or outside. You just attach a long board/piece of wood to the sides. Fairly easy.
You could try to make hockers out of them you can stack. By cutting the back off and store them criss cross (dus zeg maar de een dwars en de ander erover).
You could see what happens if you put 2 or 3 chairs on top of eachother (2nd one is flipped over then). It could make a shelving out of it. Maybe there is a Samla which just fits in between and where you can store stuff then.

DeleteI have already tried putting them on top of each other for shelving, but the legs don't go straight down, so they can't stand on each other, which is a shame really...

You could use them for firewood?
ReplyDeletethe black chairs look more hackable as benches etc - I'd swap round and use the white ones as the proper chairs and hack the black ones.
ReplyDeleteIf you wanted to hang the chairs to use as wall storage maybe you could hack a support system with stolmen supports - like that you wouldn't need to make holes in the walls?
