Hacker help: Expedit doors/frames on a budget?

Photo: IKEA.com

Materials: Expedit 4x2, GLADSAX frames

Description: any ideas/suggestion?

Me + boyfriend decided to apply doors to our Expedit (being too messy at the moment).
I was thinking if anyone has used GLADSAX frames as doors and in case if he/she can help us with the hack.

GLADSAX sizes seem to fit quite well if applied to the EXPEDIT but I would love to be sure in order to avoid wasting money + a quite new bookcase...

Any suggestion/tip would be really appreciated...

  1. I don't have experience with this myself, but there was a recent post of using picture frames as doors for expedit: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2012/10/expedit-tv-stand-for-music-man.html#more

Looks like the frames he used were a slight bit bigger at 13.5 x 13.5 to fit a 12 x 12 picture. I bet if you follow his instructions using GLADSAX you won't have any issues he didn't already mention.

  3. Hi, may it would be worth it to check this out:

the "besta tombo glass doors" have a certain kind of hinges for aluminum frames,
    maybe those would fit.

if they do fit, you should be able to purchase them as "spare parts" at ikea.

let us know please. because if it works out, i'm gonna do the sam thing with my expedit. never had the idea with the "gladsax".

    1. I wanted to follow up on the use of the beta tombo hinges above.

It definitely will fit in there. But, you need to drill through the gladsax wall, and get longer bolted screws so you can secure it with a nut on the other side.

Here is a picture of the hinge fitting into it. I haven't bought the longer screws yet. But, I have a hunch this will work.

    2. Also, the person above is right: go to the spare parts at ikea, and ask them to ship it to you. I got 10 of them for free :)

    3. Hello! I was wondering if you'd finished the project and mounted the doors. I'm curious whether they sit flush inside the expedit or sit farther out?
