RAST goes global

Materials: Rast + decoupage+ new brass fittings

Description:
I have been very inspired by the other Rast hacks posted here, especially the ones with brass hardware attached to look like a travel chest. Being a map nerd, I decided to combine the two.

1) Stain the frame with dark oak wood stain. I applied around 3 thin coats

2) Cut maps to size, stick down with PVA glue + coat with clear matte varnish

3) Whilst this is drying (takes forever!), age brass-effect corners using a solution of vinegar, lemon juice & salt. Take out to dry once tarnished.

4) Construct drawers, add antique brass handles & affix brass corners. Voila!

I actually have another one waiting in the wings but made a crucial error at stage 2 involving me gluing the maps on upside down... Be sure to have the ridge at the bottom when you paper over the fronts or you will be very disappointed!

  3. Hi everyone! Thanks for your kind comments- this is my first hack and indeed my first attempt at any sort of decoupage :) I'm glad you liked it. I'll post the other one when it's finished.

Todd- the map is from Amazon. Very cheap ~ £1.50 per map. If you search for antique map poster you should find it

  5. Nice job (I love maps too), but I don't understand this line "Be sure to have the ridge at the bottom when you paper over the fronts or you will be very disappointed!"

    1. When you construct the drawers, there is a ridge cut into the wood to slide the cardboard base into.I glued the maps on the wrong way up, making the drawer upside down (and giving the appearance that an apocalyptic event had occurred). I experimented simply sliding the drawers in the other way up but that left a large gap when the drawers were inserted into the unit. I have now repapered another map on the front :(

could you please tell me where did you find the brass-effect corners?

    1. But of Course, If you look at the other similar campaign dresser (albeit in shocking pink) on this page you'll see in their list of materials what to use. I tried to cut-and-paste, but couldn't for some reason. Sorry. It's not far down so you'll find it easily.

    2. From the pink one (which looks red on my iPhone in thumbnail): 3 packages of 2" brass flat corners.

Also, that one shows photos of the materials needed you can copy with a photo on your phone or just take to show at store. And you'll get what you need easily.

I think I'm going to use a map of our local area (we have many rivers), but antique it a little first for asthetics. This will be for my elementary school age son so I'd rather he see that for now and learn our own area. He loves maps, too. I love that about him, along with everything else.

  7. This is a great idea! My husband is crazy about maps - I'll keep this in mind for our office when we get a home. He'll be so happy. Thanks for sharing.
