Materials: Expedit Bookcase, Vika Hyttan Stainless Steel countertop, Vika Byske Legs
Description: I took (1) one of the Expedit Shelving Units with 8 sections. Lay it horizontally and put felt pads on the bottom corners (I may add casters in the future).
Then I took the countertop and added the (2) two Vika Byske chrome adjustable legs to the corners. The counter was then flipped over and attached to the shelving Unit with (2) two L brackets.

Just some words of caution. Expedit and water do not go well together, so I'd rather not use an Expedit shelf in the kitchen, where it inevitably meets some water.
ReplyDeleteExpedit is essentially honeycomb-structured cardboard covered with thin sheets of wood (I mean, some kind of wood product), and also the paint peels off quite quickly when it gets moist. Unfortunately I had to witness the process.
Thanks for the heads-up. This is a great idea if you account for those considerations.

ReplyDelete* 2 - Agree with comment #1...this Ikea stuff is cardboard & very sensitive to water & humidity. I, too, had to witness the process described above. Little bit of dampness or moisture equals this nice looking stuff falling apart, very ugly. In regard to this, I've often wondered if it would be plausible to apply some sort of clear coat to protect Expedit/Lack/etc from moisture.
Yes could you not paint and varnish or something? As I'm thinking of using a small expedit to add more counter space. Although it won't be a permanent feature as I'm renting.

ReplyDeleteFYI... The Vika Hyttan Stainless Steel countertop has been discontinued. I found one for 30 bucks in the scratch and dent of the Pittsburgh store (there is one left), though this would look fine with other ones such as the butchers block etc
