Materials: Fabian / Lack / Ekby / Assorted Screws / Stain
Description: Underwhelmed by the selection of over sofa tables on the market, especially for the price. (Including Ikea's Stockholm table.) Opted to hack my own! Two Fabian wall shelves. Four Ekby Stodis brackets. One Lack wall shelf.
Placed the two Fabians perpendicular and braced with two of the supplied metal Fabian brackets. Attached two Ekby brackets for increased stability. Attached two more Ekby brackets to the Lack top.
Then attached Ekby / Lack piece to the Fabian shelf. Voila! A new over sofa table that cost around $25.00.
One tip: choose screw sizes carefully lest you screw through the Fabian shelves. After assembly, we stained the table. In retrospect, we should have stained before assembly but we first wanted to see if this even worked. Presumably, this hack can be altered style and color wise to meet your own tastes. Enjoy!

DeleteWhy is everyone so negative? Sure, I have seen some "ugly" hacks before - but isn't this site supposed to show hacks so that other people can get ideas or inspiration? You may not use this for a sofa table, but I'm sure other people would do the same if they found something similar from the As-Is section.

I really like this and will probably try to make one. While you may be able to buy one already made and cheaper, there is the priceless satisfaction of having made something you need with your own two hands. Good job, Michael :-)

ReplyDeleteI agree that it's not the prettiest hack, but I can see how it could be useful - especially when it's off to the side of a sofa and the only part you see is the part where you rest your laptop...or a drink, or a plate, or something else while the body of the table is hidden against a wall or between furniture.

DeleteAll the hate is making my like my lil' sofa table even more! The ugly duckling, so to speak. It's not DaVinci, but I had a need and solved it via hacking. I showed my wife the posts and asked, "It's not that bad, is it? She looked at me and said, "well, not THAT bad." So, yes, my wife agrees w/ you all.

ReplyDeletepeople who happen on this site the 1st time typically see the newest submissions. Seeing several badly clobbered together hacks in a row will make them leave this site quickly and wont turn them into repeat visitors.
Obviously it's Jules site, she decides what makes it on here. But she does need to hear from everyone, not just from people who say to everything: "Good job, nicely done", no matter what the sad hack looks like.
I appreciate your reasoned response. I think a newcomer to this site -- or a first time hacker like me -- is more likely to be chased away by the vitriol. Jules says "Hacks, as we call it here, may be as simple as adding an embellishment, some others may require power tools and lots of ingenuity... Hopefully, their hacks will inspire you, perhaps even amuse." And if they don't: "IKEAHackers.net reserves the right to remove comments that do not contribute constructively to the discussion, contain profanity, personal attacks..."

ReplyDeleteIt's not my taste either, but it reminds me of my two Fabians I have lying around, and that I could do something unusual with them.... =]
This reminds me of a 7 year old bringing home a piece of artwork from school and sticking it on the fridge and all of the grownups saying "Wow good job!" I'm sure Michael is a big boy and can handle criticism. I just hate it when people give positive comments just for the sake of being nice.
