Materials: Expedit, Micke Desk, Branas Baskets, Hemnes Shoe storage
Description: So we started off by building the steps over the slope where the stairs go up and under the room. This is a very small third bedroom and was wasting a lot of space by having this slope as nothing could sit over it, so thought of ways we can build over the slope that has purpose. So after building the steps, we screwed a length of wood under the desk for the desk to sit onto at the right level, as the floor was uneven.

We then unscrewed one the square leg of the desk and sat it onto the custom built steps, fixing it with screws.. then put up 3 Expedit bookshelves over the desk leaving the 4th square free f or desk space.. on the opposite wall i just used a Hemnes shoe storage which i am using for fabrics instead of shoes, not much of a hack involved there! :-P

ReplyDeleteI'm interested in why those stairs are there to begin with. can't they just be removed? when I read the title I expected it to be a room ABOVE a staircase, and the ceiling clearance of the staircase intruding on the room a bit. This doesn't make any sense to me.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably only familiar to people who live in 1950 / 1960s British terraced or semi detached houses. One side of the house had sitting and dining room downstairs, and two good sized rooms upstairs, the other side had entrance door, staircase and corridor leading to kitchen on the ground floor, and box room, top of stairs, landing, corridor, and bathroom above. To make the box room long enough to fit a bed in it had to overhang the stairs, and to give the stairs enough height a triangle had to be stolen from the box room floor. These box rooms were hangovers from a previous generation when people had live in help, but there are possibly millions of emotionally scarred British who, because they were the second child, had the tiny bedroom while older sibling got the big oom!

DeleteI get it! There is a staircase under this room and goes up beyond that wall you created the steps on. There is normally a triangle there to allow for head height in the staircase below the room. Nice idea to make it into stairs to get up to the expedit shelves. I like this.
ReplyDeletePS: Not sure where that black chair is from, but mine is exactly the same and got it from Office Depot or Viking Direct years ago for like 35 euros here in France.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job! And I have to say, I LOVE the shoe storage that Ikea offers. These are fabulous for narrow hallways, etc due to the low profile and they hold more than shoes! I keep telling my sister to line her hallway with them for surplus storage like toilet paper, paper towels, just all kinds of stuff fits in them!

WildGift hit the nail on the head.. sorry my explanation was poor.. the room had a tonn of wasted space because the stairs go under this bedroom so there was a slope on the floor to allow for headhight when walking up the stairs so we made the slope into a kind of mini book shelf step type thing to make more use of the space and use it to build the expidite shelves over it.. and don't know why pics so poor they were taken on 10mp SLR camera
