Materials: Maskros (big one), white round filter paper
Description: I loved the size and prize of the original Maskros lamp but I did not fell in love with the "organic" leaves - and also I could not stand to see Maskros pop up everywhere.
So I came across the use of round filter paper as the leaves, 12,5 cm in diameter.
Each filter paper needs 3 little cuts - you use the original plastic mounts that come with the Maskros lamp.
The result is stunning, isn't it?

It's a reverse disco ball; all you need now is a color changing led blub and you're good to go

ReplyDeleteVery nice. I'm fed up with seeing the original everywhere too, even though I don't have one at home. Really like what you've done. This variation is much more understated, stylish and looks retro at the same time! The future possibilities are endless as long as those plastic things hold up :)
ReplyDeleteI really like the transformation of the lamp! One little idea: You could use smaller circles for the lower ones so they don't layer.. But maybe you already thought about that and decided against it :) Anyway: Great hack! =)
ReplyDeleteUgh, I hate the Maskros... it looks like a sea anemone or something equally icky. And it's everywhere.
ReplyDeleteHOWEVER! You now have me itching to go buy one! I actually really like that the papers layer up on the bottom, and the effect on the wall is gorgeous. Would love to see this with different lightly coloured papers as well, especially for during the day when it's turned off.

About colors / disco effect: Although I might give it a try (but I have not yet found a 360 degree led light with color change and remote control, just bulbs that point in one direction) I prefer the clean and unobstrusive look during the day. I mean, it's huge, really. To me, it looks as an art object.
Besides the new leaves as a second "hack" I rigged a remote on/off switch in that small white plastic ball above the lamp.
I hope to see much more "Art Maskros" in the future (IKEA, please dont read this).

Oh, and I forgot: When I manage to source 160 round silver adhesive stickers of the size of the yellow-white clips, then it'll be near perfect.

I love this idea, but is it safe? Does the light get hot enough to ignite the filter paper? I've seen several maskros hacks that I'd like to try, but they usually involve paper or other items which I'm concerned about having close to a light bulb.
ReplyDeleteAbout safety: a) the original Maskros leaves are from paper, too. b) as long as you dont put a super-hot bulb in it, it should be safe, the distance between the buld and the leaves is 40 cm.
ReplyDeleteI just ordered about 150 ping pong balls from amazon to hack this lamp to look like a Sputnik lamp, should I keep the entire thing white or spray paint it a metallic or chrome?
ReplyDeletepaper burns at 451 degrees F. don't know of a light bulb that gets that hot??
