Expedit for Compact living
Materials: Expedit, Rill casters
Description: Since I live in a small apartment and need to take care of every square meter carefully. So I went to IKEA and bought five of their "Expedit" (2x2 squares)
IKEA don't have any accessories so you could put them on wheels and still put them close together side by side. So I made two pieces of wood and put under every Expedit, and two wheels on every piece of wood.
I have them under my bed as a really compact storage. Easy hack, big relief for me..
Updated: 11 April 2012. See it in motion.

very clever! simple and effective!
ReplyDeleteI really like how the space is optimized and still it looks so tidy!
ReplyDeleteThis. is. a. super. clever. idea!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, yet so simple!
ReplyDeleteWhat is on the top of the stairs? It's quite a "strange" hole int the wall...
A bed I would presume.
DeleteYes, Its my bed :)
DeleteThis is genius!
ReplyDeleteVery clever. :) It's nice to know you're doing this kind of stuff.:) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant! Terrific use of space and flawless-looking on top of it.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! It looks great and practical.
ReplyDeleteVery clever!! Love it!
ReplyDeletesooo clever !!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCool!
ReplyDeleteIf you remove shelf and add countertop you will get even more storage space. Half of Expedit width for boxes, then some curtain or roller blind if you think boxes are not pretty to look at and you still have large shelf for your photos and books and anything.
amazing idea, simply, tidy, chic.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing.
Ooo it would be fun to put super sleek handles on the ends of the units too.
ReplyDeletewow could use you here in Texas USA
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great idea! Simple and brilliant.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I'll copy this for my new appartment.
ReplyDeleteThis also works beneath stairs very well...
That's brilliant!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love that you can just wheel the unit over to wherever you're working on a given project. I'm racking my brains trying to find someplace I could squeeze storage like that into my apartment :)
ReplyDeleteThe idea is not new, but this is certainly the easiest way to apply it, and still relatively cheap! At least compared to having it custom-made...
ReplyDeleteWAAAAAAAUUUUUUWWWW The best idea of all Expedit hacks!
ReplyDeleteLove this hack!!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic!
ReplyDeleteW.O.W. brilliant! :))))
ReplyDeleteYou should win a prize for this.
ReplyDeleteVery clever and clean looking - I would add some nice hardware on the sides for handles/pulls. I might have a perfect place for this!
ReplyDeleteyou could also mount trays on the top of each one if you wanted more storage abilities, jewelry trays, makeup etc.
ReplyDeleteI really like this! Could you also share more about your bed? How did u secure your bed to float like that safely? I dont see any support below, or is it an inbuilt loft?
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! It reminds me of old-fashioned library archives. In the basement of my college library, books and periodicals were stored on enormous floor-to-ceiling shelves that rolled in either direction when you turned a huge crank on the side. That allowed 10+ shelves to stand in a row and only sacrificed enough space for one aisle where a browsing student would stand. Of course, many different people couldn't browse more than one shelf at a time; students had to be as efficient with reading and research selections at the shelves were with their space.
ReplyDeleteHi do you mind sharing how you built that loft bed? I am very interested in building one very similar to yours... cheers
ReplyDeleteTerrific !
ReplyDeleteVraiment une bonne idée!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderfully cleaver. It makes me laugh :-) Well done!!!
DeleteAwesome! Thanks a lot for sharing. The loft-bed is also terrific. Do you mind sharing a little bit about it?
ReplyDeleteThe bed was already build when I moved in, but im sure youll find a easy solution if you just google it :)
DeleteI am quite convinced that this is the best hack I've ever seen. The simplicity of it is fantastic. I'll be sure to think of this solution if I'm ever in need of such storage. No, wait. I'll find a way to need such storage just so I can implement this hack. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI love Ikea products. I remember that my husband surprised me 3 different Ikea products for my new aspen condo and I have so much fun making my own designs with this product. It’s very clever, unique, simple and effective especially if you have a limited space in your room.
ReplyDeleteThis is really an intelligent use of less space. My room is very small and I really want this kind of furniture setting in my room so that I can comfortably manage my goods. The use of white color in the room walls and on furniture is looking very cool.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about other people but for me, I really love the idea of compact living. That is now what I am looking for since I am planning to buy a house and lot that is for sale.
