Description: An IkeaFans user, responding to my question about using Pax wardrobes back-to-back, pointed me to an Ikea video in which an in-house interior designer shows a brilliantly simple way to create a walk-in closet with Pax. I feel obliged to pass this on. Enjoy!

I feel like you need a very particularly sized bedroom for this to work, but if you have such a bedroom, can't beat this.
ReplyDeleteI did it with Gorm - much cheaper but not as nice.
ReplyDeleteThe Gorm allowed me to completely block the end of the room. Unlike the pax, Gorm can turn corners and I also created a "door" in the structure that leads to my "closet".
The Gorm solution is also good for renters who need to move their furniture easily.
And I just use simple plastic boxes inside - cheap again.

What a great solution for some of the newer houses that seem to have these "master suites" that are really just stupidly huge bedrooms. Sorry, but all I need of my bedroom is a nice bed, a couple of bedside tables, a place for my clothes, and room to maneuver around it all (oh, and I'll take a bathroom). What a lovely way to suck up some of that space!
ReplyDeleteI agree, you would need the right shaped room (with doors in certain spots for this too work) but it's such a good idea! Love taking up unused bedroom footage for storage solutions.
ReplyDeleteNot only would you need the right shaped room, but my calculations (in AU) put the cost of the frames alone at over $1000... that's without all the accessories, doors, hardware etc. It'd be more cost efficient to hire someone to make the frame, and the quality would be better. You could add the hardware and accessories yourself to keep costs down, and still come out on top.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Besides the cost, the only concern I'd have is how it looks between the top of the units and the ceiling --doesn't totally show it in the video. I wonder, is there much room there and does it look weird, or is it totally fine?
ReplyDeleteWe have just requested a wall to be put in our bedroom in our new house (which hasn't been built yet)to serve as a feature wall/bedhead and to create a walk through behind it. It works out to about $130au per metre for the actual wall. So for a 2.51m wall like ours, it's pretty cheap in actual fact. We will be looking to use some items from Ikea to actually turn it into the walk through wardrobe once it's built. Love this!

ReplyDeleteOK, so I just love the fabric above the bed part. I have to put my bed between 2 windows in my master... and this is just the right spark to add to it. The perfect fabric to go with my paint color, too!
ReplyDeletehi i notice that the pax is setup in the MIDDLE of the room... i just bought a pax an it said i must 'fasten it to the wall with wall fasteners' - probably for support. what if i don't? i plan to follow what was done in the video and have the wardrobe in the middle of the room.. please help .... thank you...!
ReplyDeleteI've had my Pax in my bedroom for 2 years, against a wall, but not attached. I had a friend over and her 4 year & 2 year boys thought the inside of my Pax looked like a good hiding place - yike! Although all was fine, the unit is heavy and sturdy so I don't think you'll have an issue.
DeleteThey are pretty stable but for legal reaso ns they say to affix it to the wall. Keep heavier stuff at the bottom and don't pullout all dawers at the same time

ReplyDeleteTo lower the risk that this would fall, the ikea designer used two single wardrobes on the back of the larger wardobe combo, then attached mending plates at the top to join the wardrobes and stabilize the entire unit.

The only issue I have with this hack is how do you deal with bedside table lamps? Where do you plug them?
ReplyDeleteI love this kind of hack. I'm currently setting up a double height wardrobe using IVAR in my tiny spare room so I can rent it out from Monday to Fridays. Aneboda wardrobes are useful but double hanging in the same space is more useful. And if double hanging isn't required its so easy to fit extra shelves. It's the adaptability that I love.
ReplyDeleteI'm then going to convert my sitting room into a bedroom for myself (I shall have 3 upstairs letting rooms then - I need to survive financially!) When I've written this, I shall see if I can build a cheaper copy of the PAX idea but using IVAR instead. Now, where did I put that steel tape measure?
