Materials: 2 x standard Besta open shelves, Faktum doors, wood panel
Description: I needed a thin cabinet for one side of my very small kitchen. The 20cm wide Besta open shelves were exactly the right width.
However, the wall would not support the weight of the shelves so I couldn't mount them on it and I loathe and despise visible feet on furniture.
So, we screwed the feet as far back as possible whilst still allowing for support, then we screwed the shelves to the wall. We cut a decoration panel to size and mounted it under the shelves, covering up the feet.
We added the Faktum doors and, as a final touch, we had a piece of coloured glass cut to the right size and placed this on the top of our new, skinny kitchen cabinet.
This gives the effect of a floating cabinet. It's a simple but effective hack and I am very happy with the results :).

It's two Besta open cabinets 120cm long x 20 cm wide attached together. The grey 'panel' on top is a piece of glass cut to size. The doors are regular Ikea doors (Faktum). The 'panels we used to cover the feet are the usual skirting board/(mop board?).

Which size of FAKTUM Door did you use for the 120x64x20 Besta shelf?????? Dont they usually come in heights of 70 and 92 cm?? Did you cut them? Thanks for the info!

Thanks for that comment, mr shit-troll. Others who are interested: the coloured glass cost around 60 Euros to make. I made a mistake about the doors, they are the doors that are specifically for the Besta range (like these: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/images/products/besta-storage-combination-w-sliding-doors__0112546_PE264333_S4.JPG).
ReplyDeleteI assumed they were Faktum doors because I have the same doors on a high kitchen cabinet. Now I think about it, I actually wanted to use the same doors I have on my kitchen cabinets (Arsta) but you're right, they are the wrong size.
