Materials: Expedit, MDF cut to size, felt , glue etc
Description: Yes, of course IKEA sells drawer sets for its Expedit but Pippa DIYs cheaper ones that maximizes your storage space in the Expedit cubby. Compared to the bargain that Expedit is, the drawer inserts are pretty expensive – and the sliding mechanism and surround also take up a relatively large amount of space - leaving one with a pretty puny drawer.
Given the maximum size that a drawer in an Expedit block can be, it's unlikely to have to be mega strong. These MDF drawers which run smoothly and snugly on felt pads provide maximum storage and are plenty sturdy enough – we store shoe cleaning supplies in one, and vacuum cleaner / dustpan stuff in the other.

ReplyDeleteI´ve got two Expedit shelves in the kids rooms. For those rooms I think DRÖNA baskets are ok. I´ve got two girls, so some in pink and pink with roses are fine.
ReplyDeleteBut I want to exchange my Billy shelves in my sewing and crafting room for some Expedit shelves and I was thinking about hacking baskets out of MDF, but those would be expensive and heavy and not so easy to build for me (I usually make DIY projects out of different materials, but not out of wood). I think doors would be easier, if you would make holes for the hinges directly at the Expedit walls. Thought of asking my dad to do this (he works at a hardware store and is very good in DIY projects with wood). But now, that I´ve seen those drawlers, I changed my mind. I need to copy those, I could do this without help of my dad or husband.
I really love Expedit, it´s a wonderful furniture, but those, in my opinion cheap looking, plastic baskets @ ikea are available for 10€ (in Germany) and for 15€ those made of natural materials. For my sewing room I will have more than 60 boxes or doors, so of course I would never buy them at ikea, it´s far too expensive.
