Adjustable Desktop Microphone Boom on a budget

Materials: Black Forså work lamp

Description: I needed an adjustable stand for my microphone, but didn’t want to fork out the incredible amount of money for an official boom which can be mounted on a desk.

After realising that all these overpriced stands look like extendable work lamps, I decided to have a quick look in Ikea and to my surprise, I struck gold.

I picked Black Forså work lamp up for a modest £16.99, went home and cut the existing power cables out and removed the light fixing to the end, then attached the anti-shock mount, using a couple of bits of plastic and some washers to pad it out, as the gap was quite large.

The cables were cabled-tied to the arms to keep everything neat and tidy.

There you have a completely adjustable and compact podcast setup that you can take with you on travels, or just to use at home and still keep all your desk space.

I meant to ask, what sort of anti-shock mount did you use?

Nice. I am convinced. I have a similar mic (AT2020 USB condensor) of similar size. I need to invest in the mic stand itself, but will try to pick up one of these stands next time I see an IKEA. Where did you get your mic stand/holder?

  3. Finally bought a better mic and a shock mount. I bought the Samson CO1U podcasting kit (came with desktop stand and shock mount). It did “just work.” I tried to take a video, but it didn’t turn out very well. The problem was that the mic and mount were too heavy. I couldn’t tighten the bolt enough to get the shock mount to stay put. And the springs weren’t tight enough to keep the arm extended.

I ended up tossing the lamp and using the stand that came with the kit.

    Great idea! congrats!

  5. Thanks for the response. Looking forward to trying this out. May put up a video, too.

Hey Ch@rles, I did the same thing with the cheaper Tertial lamp ($10 CAD), and it “just worked.” My mic was an AT2020 large diaphram condensor (with an attachment similar to the shock mount shown here — i.e., a slot with a single hole in it), and I removed the lamp’s head, but the important point was that I kept the included (Ikea) rubber spacer and wrapped it around the mic’s metal mount before screwing it back together. No drilling, no extra parts. Also, the mic stays in place very well when adjusted (meaning that it isn’t too heavy for the arm). Hope that helps.

  7. I am extremely interested in doing something very similar to this, but all the posts I can find seem to be short on detail. Does it “just work” or did you have to drill, file, etc anything? What mic and shock mount are you using? Is that relevant or are the mount points a standard size?

    What are the speakers?
