Photography Light Box
Materials: SKUBB laundry hampers x 2
Description: 2 white laundry hampers were used to create a large photo light box.
Place the hampers together so that the lids will be facing towards each other. The hamper nearest you will be the front hamper.
1. Cut the material from the front and back panel of front hamper.
2. Cut the material from the front of the back hamper.
3. Cut the material from the inside wire frames to allow more light through the sides and use office clips to hold up the wire frames.
4. Place the front hamper and back hamper together using clear packaging tape to join the seam.
5. Bring the lids towards each other and fold down and clip in place using large office clips.
Backdrop ideas: Cut a roll from a roller blind as your backdrop or use fabric, wallpaper or paper.
2 Hampers were purchased at a sale price of $8.99 ea (reg 12.99 each). Office clips, approx. $5. Total cost $25.

This is brilliant! Before I go all out with this though: How does it store? Does it fold together somewhat?
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting a light box for quite some time, but cost has prevented me from doing so. Your hack is ingenious!
ReplyDeleteLike the commentor above asked, how easy is it to fold and store?
Cool really good hack
ReplyDeletethank you, I take picture of my crafts I sell and this is much better than my set up
ReplyDeleteOh, which great idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks for Showing :)
Can you believe I tried to make this (exactly the same)? I just had one skubb. That was a couple of years ago and I got stack so I left it unfinished!! Oh my gosh, thanks thanks thanks thanks!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf you are photographing small things, & lack space, why not use the foldable Skubb boxes? The 55x44x33 ones would be good for wide flat things in one position, and tall things in the other.
ReplyDeleteThe fabric is the same as the laundry basket, and you can put it away between sessions.
Even though they cost $40 a pair in Australia, compared to $22 a pair everywhere else, including Europe where wages are the same as here, this is worth having for small jobs.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comments!!
ReplyDeleteYes, this does fold flat for storage. Just unclip the office clips at the top and the metal sides that hold the whole thing up will allow you to fold it away. I saved the material that I cut away to eventually sew a case (probably needing to add my own material as I don't think it'll be enough) but for the most part, there's hardly any waste.
Also, there are other size Skubb boxes as Anonymous pointed out - so if you were just taking pictures of smaller items you could buy the smaller Skubb and apply the methods as needed (such as cutting out only the front and leaving everything else as is. This size was for photographing larger items - my husband has larger wood turned objects so we were looking for something bigger.
I hope this helps. Good luck!!!
This is a brilliant idea! I've been looking for a light box but the commercial ones don't really work well with me and cost a bit much. Now I can make as many as I want.
ReplyDeleteThat's just perfect. Love it.
