Materials: Brimnes Headboard
Description: Hi there! Just wondering whether there is a stable way of supporting a headboard that is designed to be attached to a wall.
Seems like it would be possible to add two legs to keep the headboard away from the wall but will it be stable enough when the shelves are filled with heavy stuff?

I have the brimnes headboard, and I had not fixed it to the wall. The headboard rests on the wall, and the bed prevents it from falling down :)

ReplyDeleteDo you just want it to stay upright without the wall support or do actually want to be able to lean against it?
It seems like it might be possible (mind, I've never seen the headboard, so take my advice with a grain of salt!) to buy two of the headboards and use the larger pieces to create a two-sided Brimnes. If you want a headboard that would be attractive from both sides, ie if the head of the bed isn't against a wall. It might be rather costly to buy two, though!
ReplyDeleteYou could use a piece of 1/4 or 1/2 inch plywood, cut as high and wide as the headboard. Just finish it to match your wall and attach the headboard to it as if it were the wall. If you have baseboard, you may want to remove enough to allow the backer board to snuggle up to the wall, which would allow for more stability.
ReplyDeleteI was also thinking plywood would do the trick. Should be very strong once you put it together and you could paint it to match the wall or the headboard.

Yes it is possible for it to be freestanding, I know because I have done it! We found ours in the bargain corner for £5! We snapped it up so quickly we didn't realise that it would need fixing to the wall (which we were unable to do because we are in rented accommodation) so we simple bought some wood which we had cut to size and made 3 additional legs for each shelving compartment to rest on. We painted them white and it's worked pretty well!
ReplyDeleteI used two Vika Furusund table legs, cut them down to the right length, and screwed them into the bottom shelf on either side. It was easy, cheap, and much more stable than screwing the headboard to the frame, or just sandwiching it between the frame and the wall. Hope this helps!

ReplyDeleteWe brought this today and it is very stable against the wall without attaching to the wall even without the bed there.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing is without the wall attachments you can here a knocking noise (the back of headboard knocking the wall) if people on the bed are moving vigorously ;)
